OXFORD – An early-morning fire has left a bowling alley and bar a total loss.

Around 4 a.m. Wednesday a fire was reported at The Lanes and Brass Monkey Pub and Grill on West Jackson Avenue. The major traffic artery was closed from the time of firefighters’ arrival until about 6:45 a.m. A backhoe was used to give firefighters access to parts of the building where they were still extinguishing spot fires around 9:15 a.m.

Oxford Fire Chief Mike Hill said it is too early to determine the fire’s cause but added that every fire in the city is investigated.

The combination of the fire and a car accident on Tuesday night left many Oxford residents without water on Wednesday morning.

A car struck a utility pole on Molly Barr Road around 9:30 on Tuesday night, affecting the pumps that supply backup to the water system.

When the water used to fight the fire lowered stores in the city's elevated tanks, water that would have normally replenished those tanks was prevented from doing so, leaving parts of the city with low water pressure.

That problem was fixed by Wednesday afternoon.

The Lanes was formerly known as Kiamie's Bowling Alley.
