Cass J. Choate, of Somerville, Tenn., was in serious condition, The Med spokeswoman Dorothy Ancar said.
FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac said the pilot was performing aerobatic maneuvers in his Pitts S-2B biplane when the engine failed and the plane crashed into a wooded area in Yalobusha County.
Choate was trapped in the single-engine aircraft and had to be extracted before he was sent to the hospital, Yalobusha County dispatcher Thomas West said. Salac said the plane caught fire.
The plane is registered to Choate and William L. Stewart.
The plane crashed about a half mile east of Interstate 55 and south of Highway 32.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate and determine the cause of the crash.
