No one was seriously injured when the maroon minivan ran into the building at the corner of Main and Church streets. The branch is closed today for cleanup, but customers have limited access to their P.O. boxes if they enter through the Church Street doors. The Thomas Street branch is open until 6 p.m. if you need to mail anything. And, post office employees said no mail was damaged during the wreck.
Faye Clement, the driver of the van, spoke with the Daily Journal at the scene. She said she was shaken up but OK. She said she had bought stamps for Christmas cards and then returned to her van that was parallel parked on Main Street. She said she was reversing and then she thinks the gas pedal got stuck. She said she isn't quite sure what happened, but the van ended up inside the building, with the front of the car facing out. It smashed the glass barricade inside the building that surrounds the Post Office area in the lobby.
A customer suffered minor injuries from shattered glass and is OK, according to law enforcement officials. She was the only person in line, a Post Office employee said.
Everyone else is OK, including the driver and the post office employees.
