David Neal Cox Sr., 41, and Marcus Word, 17, escaped at about midnight Sunday. Word was captured about daylight, said Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards, and Cox was captured at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Word was in jail on breaking and entering and attempted sexual battery charges, and Cox was in jail on capital murder charges from a hostage standoff in Sherman where authorities say Cox Shot and killed his wife Kim and kidnapped two children in May 2010.
Both men will be charged with felony jail escape. Edwards said the men broke into a business to steal clothing, so they will both face burglary charges. Cox will face multiple burglary charges because he also broke into an abandoned home, Edwards said.
When the sheriff’s department learned of the escape, they called in for help from New Albany Police Department, U.S. Marshals, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Pontotoc and DeSoto County Sheriff’s Departments and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
“We reached out to all of them at 2 a.m., and they were all here and a big part of it,” Edwards said. “We’re just thankful we’ve got agencies we can work well with and tap into their resources to help us.”
