What music have you been listening to lately?
I've got four – count 'em, four – new albums on my iPod. Let me tell you about them!
The first two are courtesy of Album Club, actually. We had a new member who came last month and was looking to give away some of his vinyl, and he did just that. I ended up with albums by two Memphis bands, The Oblivians and Magic Kids.
The Oblivians album is "The Oblivians Play Nine Songs with Mr. Quintron" – it's basically a bunch of gospel songs done in a punk style. It is awesome. Awesome, awesome, awesome. If you love punk or gospel, you've gotta hear this album.
Magic Kids remind me a little, little bit of The Beach Boys, very poppy and summery and happy. At times it's ALMOST a little too adorable for me, but really, I can't say anything bad about the album I got, "Memphis."
The other two albums I got aren't related to Album Club or Memphis at all, lol.
One is composer Christophe Beck's score to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." There are these awesome little scores from episodes from the show's 2nd-5th seasons. Pretty rad. It's amazing how I can hear some of this music and see the scene happen in my head, lol. I wish some scores from later episodes were on this album, but I really can't complain. Powerful stuff. If you like Buffy, don't hesitate to pick up the score.
Check out "Massacre," from the episode "Becoming." It's amazing how much power and emotion Beck put into just a few minutes.
The other album is "Little Hell" by City and Colour.
I loved and adored the band's last album, "Bring Me Your Love," and I think "Little Hell" is just as good as that album. I just love Dallas Green's voice. The music on "Little Hell" is a little less singer-songwriter-y and is more fleshed out.
What music are you listening to? Share and we can all experience great music. :)
PS!! Our July Album Club meeting will be on the 21st. Our album is, well, up to you. Bring any album you want – for any reason – and present it and we'll listen to one track of your choosing from the album. Maybe it's a band you think others should hear (or maybe it's YOUR band), maybe it's your favorite album of 2011, maybe it's the first album you ever bought, maybe it's the album you thought you'd love but you hate – for whatever reason, bring it! We'll meet at 6 p.m. at the Link Centre. Join us!
