Good morning, people and other assorted species. It's Tuesday, the first of May, all of that, and I've got a whole lotta links for you to digest this morning. Enjoy.
• My opinion offering discusses the MSU baseball team and what it will take to finish this season strong. Hint: It starts with "p" and ends with "itching." (CLICK HERE) The crucial stat cited in my column: Over the last seven games (six of them wins), MSU's pitchers have posted a 1.16 ERA. Over the same span, MSU's hitters have recorded a .175 batting average.
Yeah. So, speaking of pitching, junior right-hander Chris Stratton was named SEC pitcher of the week yesterday (CLICK HERE). He's not bad.
• Turning to basketball, I rounded up the roster moves in today's Journal (CLICK HERE). With P.J. Hardwick on the way out, MSU now has one point guard, Jacoby Davis, who signed last week. Who will be his backup? Probably the next guy Rick Ray signs, and that could happen this week.
The addition of Colin Borchert fills a need in the post. Last night's blog entry tells you a good deal about the 6-foot-8 juco transfer, so I'll refer you to that. I'll be making an effort today to get Borchert on the phone.
Borchert, who hails from Phoenix, began his college career at nearby Yavapai College. That school cut its basketball programs last year, so he transferred to East Mississippi CC. That's why he waited until the spring to sign.
"We told everybody he was not going to sign early, just because we wanted to give everybody an opportunity to see him and recruit him," EMCC coach Mark White said.
