Brides and grooms will no longer be showered with birdseed in Fairpark due to a policy change triggered by an $800 fountain repair.

The board of the Tupelo Redevelopment Agency, which governs Fairpark, on Thursday said it has revised its wedding policy so that nothing can be thrown at weddings in the park in front of City Hall.

“No birdseed, rice or popcorn,” said Debbie Brangenberg, the city liaison for the board.

The move comes after TRA this week spent $837 to buy new parts for the dancing fountain. Brangenberg said it was damaged after wedding participants threw the inside part of sunflower seeds.

“When the fountain was turned back on, (the seeds) expanded and broke the motor,” Brangenberg said.

TRA board members also OK’d spending $441 to buy a backup motor for the fountain, in case the current one breaks.
