The state Department of Health regularly inspects restaurants and food facilities.

The facilities are graded from A to C. "A" is the best. "C" is the equivalent of failing, but the inspection isn't bad enough to merit the closure of the restaurant.  Any restaurants with a C get a follow-up visit within 10 days.

---

The following Lee County facilities were inspected between 4/20 and today.

-- A's --

  • Nettleton High
  • Plantersville School
  • Shannon Elementary
  • Shannon High
  • Joyner School

You are right about Barnhill's, Internut. Looks like it has had a few problems.

Here's the grading process that's posted on the MDOH website:

---- A ----

No critical violations noted.

The facility inspection found no critical violations. Critical violations of the state Food Code are those more likely to lead to food contamination, illness, or other health risk.

----- B ------

Critical violations were corrected during the inspection.

Critical violations were found, but corrected under the supervision of the inspecting environmentalist. No further corrective actions are required.

------ C -------

Critical violations have not been corrected.

Critical violations were found, but some or all were not corrected during the inspection. The facility will be re-inspected, and all violations must be corrected in a time period not to exceed 10 days. The re-inspection date is posted on the graded report. If violations are not corrected in the specified time, steps are taken to suspend the facility's permit to operate.

A grade of C is also given if critical violations are repeated from the last inspection, even if they were corrected at that time.

I'm curious to know how this scoring system actually works. I see lots of inspections where everything is either "in compliance, "not applicable," or "not observed," and yet the facility has drawn a B. I can't see any obvious distinction between those and the A inspections.

Also, I can't help but notice that Barnhill's has drawn a C once in each of the last 4 calendar years. Yikes.
