Mississippi State wide receiver Chad Bumphis entered a guilty plea to a charge of failure to comply, and a charge of public drunkenness was retired during a bench trial in Tupelo Municipal Court this afternoon.

Bumphis, 22, was arrested in Tupelo on Jan. 1 and charged with both public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, and the latter charge was changed to a failure to comply, which is a less severe offense. He will pay a $234 fine within the next 30 days, and his attorney, Rob Laher, will move to have Bumphis' record expunged within the next six months.

"The police happened upon him when he was upset, as anyone would be, and they caught him at his worst," Laher said.

City prosecutor Richard Babb said it's "pretty customary to plea bargan" and was satisfied with the resolution.

Bumphis was at the downtown Atlanta Bar & Grill for a New Year's party, and during the celebration he was struck in the neck with a champagne bottle. He became upset, went outside the bar and was uncooperative with officers, who arrrested Bumphis after he failed to calm down.

He suffered a broken tooth and neck laceration from the assault. According to Laher, the assailant has not been found.

Bumphis' mother, Dorothy, who accompanied Chad to court today, had maintained that her son was not drunk during the incident (CLICK HERE).

Bumphis (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) will be a senior this fall for MSU. After leading the Bulldogs in receiving his first two years, the Tupelo High School product made 25 catches for 339 yards and three touchdowns last season.
