"I want to continue to advance Tupelo to be the best it can be in all regards," said Pitts, speaking in the lobby of the Convention & Visitors Bureau downtown.
Pitts is the first to enter the mayor's race after the Nov. 4 announcement that current Mayor Jack Reed Jr. won't seek a second term.
Other possible candidates include Ward 1 Councilman Markel Whittington, Ward 6 Councilman Mike Bryan and former At-Large Councilwoman and past mayoral candidate Doyce Deas. All told the Daily Journal they're still mulling the decision to run.
Pitts, a 69-year-old Republican, is currently serving out his first term as a councilman.
