You know what they did today? Spring practice, that's what. Session No. 10 wasn't too involved, though, because there is a coaches clinic going on and so Dan Mullen was showing his visitors how they do a lot of basic things.

But I have some observations from the seven-on-seven and team drills, mostly to do with the passing game.

• Tyler Russell and Dak Prescott both looked sharp during seven-on-seven and for a good portion of the team drills. Russell hit a leaping Chad Bumphis over the middle. Prescott found Brandon Heavens for a long TD.

Redshirt freshman tailback Josh Robinson continues to run well. On one play he bounced it to the right once, then again, and sped around the corner. On another similar play, he got it outside, and defensive coordinator Chris Wilson jumped all over linebacker Chris Hughes for playing it as an inside run.

As cornerback Johnthan Banks noted, the offense is doing much better at this point in spring than normal.

"Since I've been here, we usually dominate the offense," Banks said. "We've got some old receivers. Tyler's old. We've got some old receivers that know how to go out and get the ball, and they know how to run routes and know how to run the option routes. A lot of people, they've grown up a lot and they want it more. They're going out and making plays like we are."

• But later on, the defensive backs began asserting themselves and making plays, too. Cornerback Darius Slay jumped a route to intercept Russell. Prescott made an ill-advised throw back to his right – middle of the field – and safety Louis Watson came up with it. Backup safety Dee Arrington also had a pick, and then moments later a pass break-up.

"Our offense is really executing at a high level, especially throwing the ball with Tyler and Dak," Wilson said. "If you're not close in coverage, they'll make every throw. Today our guys were better with their eyes. We were better with pressure up front; getting pressure up front really helped us in the back end."

• In case you were wondering, the offensive line was back to its normal first team, with Blaine Clausell at left tackle and Damien Robinson at right tackle, etc.

• Had great chats tonight with Banks and fellow cornerback Corey Broomfield. We talked about Broomfield, a.k.a. "Unc," upgrading from a CD player to an iPhone, and about his old-school ways in general. I'll have some SOLID GOLD video of those guys in the morning.

A sampling from Broomfield, talking about his old go phone: "I stayed with it for about two years. It got the job done, so I couldn't just let it go. It was hard to let it go."

• Tomorrow night (6 o'clock) is the Bulldogs' second scrimmage of the spring, to be held in Davis Wade Stadium. It's open to the public.

"Coach Mullen wants to get everybody anywhere from 50 to 60 snaps in the game, and getting the right guys the opportunity out there playing," Wilson said.
