Mississippi State wide receiver Chris Smith is having surgery on Tuesday after breaking his jaw during an altercation Saturday night in Meridian, a team spokesman confirmed tonight.

"We're still investigating all the events around what happened," coach Dan Mullen said in a statement.

UPDATE: I checked with the Meridian PD this morning, and they show no records of an arrest or citation for Smith over the weekend. That confirms what I had heard.

Smith, a Meridian High product, was third on the team in receptions last season (24) and fourth in receiving yards (264). He had one touchdown catch.
