Former Amory and Mississippi State standout Mitch Moreland is doing just fine in his first full Major League Baseball season. Entering tonight's game versus Houston, the first baseman/outfielder is batting .294 with 10 home runs and 22 RBIs in 66 games, and he's slugging .489 with an on-base percentage of .355.

Moreland got called up in late July last season and did well, hitting .255 with nine homers, 25 RBIs and a .364 OBP in 47 games. He had a strong showing in the postseason, batting .348 with a homer and seven RBIs as Texas reached the World Series, where he was 6 of 13 with three RBIs.

A notable quote in the story (on which Brandon Speck of the Monroe Journal did a fine job) comes from veteran pitcher Darren Oliver: "One day, he's going to be the man running things around here."

Moreland was the man Tuesday night, recording his first career walk-off homer, a solo job to lead off the 11th inning and lift the Rangers to a 5-4 win over Houston.

The kid just might have a future.
