Well, we're in for a fun weekend in Oxford. The past three days have done nothing to loosen up the SEC West standings. Things are as tight as ever, which means we're in for some drama down the stretch.
Mississippi State (29-18, 11-13 SEC) finished off a sweep of Tennessee earlier today in Knoxville, the second sweep of the year for State – and only its second series win. With Ole Miss (27-21, 11-13) also winning today – 7-6 over No. 2 South Carolina to clinch the series – and Auburn (25-22, 11-13) blowing an 8-0 lead to Georgia (14-11 final), we have a three-way tied in the West.
MSU swept Auburn earlier this season, but the Tigers won their series with Ole Miss. So there's even more reason for the Bulldogs to win at least two in Oxford this week (series starts Thursday). A berth in the SEC Tournament – and possibly the NCAA tourney – could be on the line, because Auburn, MSU and Ole Miss are tied for the seventh-best record in the league.
To the standings!
South Carolina 18-6
Ole Miss 11-13
There will still be another weekend of SEC play, of course, with MSU hosting LSU and Ole Miss visiting Arkansas. This race for Hoover could very well come down to the final day.
