Florida is not as dominant right now as it has been in recent seasons, but it was up there among the national elite many times when the team I was covering, whether Ole Miss or MSU, got the better of the Gators.

Florida was ranked No. 3 in 2000 when MSU off-set the Gators' 494 passing yards with 351 rushing yards and won 47-35.

Getting into the Way Back Machine now, but I was a Meridian Star employee in 1992 when I covered a Thursday night MSU win over Florida, 30-6, in which the Bulldogs limited Gators running back Errict Rhett.

Afterward, as players were walking off the field and media headed to the interview room I walked alongside Rhett and asked him what State had done to have so much defensive success. He used an expletive, in a polite sort of way, to explain that he really had no idea.

Later, on the Ole Miss beat, I watched Eli Manning pass for a mere 154 yards but lead the Rebles to a 17-14 win over then-No. 4 Florida. Matt Grier had a couple of picks, one returned for a touchdown.

The Ole Miss defense knocked around Rex Grossman that day.

The Rebels followed up that game with a 20-17 win in Gainesville the next season.

I recall that after State defeated Florida in 2000 it was absolutely destroyed in the Swamp the following season, 52-0, when the Gators were ranked No. 2. I asked a Florida player if he was concerned that the Bulldogs might score late against the reserves and spoil the shutout. His response was, “We could have played for two weeks, and they wouldn't have scored.”

After the 2003 win, Ole Miss didn't see the Gators again until 2007, a 30-24 Ole Miss loss in Oxford.

Then came the 2008 trip, the 31-30 Ole Miss win, the Kentrell Lockett blocked PAT, the big game from Dext McCluster, Jevan Snead's deep ball to Shay Hodge and finally the fourth-down stop of Tim Tebow to end the day for the eventual national champs.

I've never heard a quieter stadium. Unexpected wins are always fun to cover, because players and coaches are so excited – and talkative – afterward.

Thanks Hector, but that post was directed to 17. Like you, I meant no personal disrespect. I just enjoy poking fun at state fans...

Actually not worried at all about Hector. And your right: the mental midgets can't compete with the Ole Miss grads...

Nah, no personal attacks. Just generalizations like your comments about Wallace's blister and your generalizations about the University's record for this year. It gets boring on here if we can't poke fun at the State fans for being an agricultural school and rednecks and ya'll cant poke fun at us about our records and the fact that we are snobs.

Don't recall ever mentioning that you must have a miserable life. That didn't seem like a generalization, but sounds like a very personal attack...

Of course, I'm sure you will have a rebuttal to this post too. And I'm sure there will be no apologies from your side for the personal attack ...

Gee DocJ, looks like Hector lined you out pretty good on that one! You best crawl back into your cave and wait til spring. You can't compete with these dogs. A mental midget vs brainiacs, it's no contest. Your posts are always personal atacks, you never mention any factual or imperical data. You must lead a miserable life and feel the need to take it out upon the ones you deem "less desirable". All in all, you represent the bears fans base rather well, I suppose.

,Being a heifer fan, I'm sure you didn't associate that reference as identifying you as being from the "farm" school. I wasn't aware of farming being a stereotype for Latinos. As far as trainwrecks, we'll see how long u keep Mullet after he shows his inability to win with his players now that most of Croom's are gone.

And unlike any Moo u posters, if my comment was misconstrued (for you heifer fans that means taken in a way other than intended), my apologies. I forgot that Starkvillians don't get satire (you ca look that one up).

docj...I can't believe you are making fun of my Latino heritage! "reference to plowing"? Just like an Oxford neck, you all have a heritage steeped in prejudice ideas. Yes, most of my Latino brothers make our living in landscaping, but for you to mock that is unbelievable! I was born in this country and pay my taxes, just like you! Your ancestors more than likely came from outside America as well!

heck 75% of the bear's own fans voted that this team would only win 2 or less games. I mean geeze Louise, that speaks volumes about the faith they have in Freeze's chance of turning this poopsickle of a program around.

There no mistaking where or what Docj is after showing his ignorance! The trainwreck you speak of are the 8 SEC teams bearng down upon DA BEAR'S backsides. After yet another o fer the SEC, you will be losing control of your bladder, you will be so pissed off at your women's basketball coach.

No mistaking where hector is from after that reference to plowing...

And we do enjoy watching those train wrecks, like the lack of institutional control the heifers may soon get struck with.

We come over here, because everybody loves to watch a train wreck, the "big wreck" at 'Dega or the dude get eaten by the great white. There is just more comedic relief over here. We come here, because it's fun to jump on a program that is the laughing stock of the strongest conference is the NCAA! We come here because we can and we enjoy your misery. We come here because you guys are so easy to mock, because Da Bears are terrible and an embarrassment to this conference and YES, Alford is a great writer, I repeat a great writer, indeed! You are welcome to post on Locke's blog, if you can handle it!

if you go to brads blog there are seldom posts.

that is sad because i dont think he really likes cow town fooseball any way.

These mangy dogs have to keep coming over here because State ha no fans to talk to. Its about classless but what can you expect look at thier coach. They keep celebrating aftr a pathetic season last year. I just one or two rebs had showed up for the egg bowl they would have lost and stayed home. Wished they had . The bowl was about as a low of bowl out there and it was pathetic as far as play. wow a lot to brag about.

When they implode this year--will they still keep coming over here. Cant really blame them PA is a first rate writer. who wouldnt want to be on his blog. just hate its mangy dogs!

Even in the wake of an impendng NCAA investigation and forthcoming sanctions, I see that our resident neck fans have still managed to make it over to the blog of the Flagship University.

I told you hicks yesterday that you should apply for the neck wide receiver job, as there was a recent opening. Don't worry, keep those resume's dusted off, because there will be another opening soon.

I love lamp! LOUD NOISES!!! let's see your name is the Ole MIss Rebels and your mascot is a blackbear? Hey it makes sense to me! DocJ you are probably correct, State may win only one game this season and it will be THE EGG BOWL for the 4th straight time! Good luck in the Bear Bowl, cause I see the Central Arkansas Bears beating the Ole Miss Blackbears in the opener! Still no SEC wins for Blackbears of Oxford, 22 straight SEC losses and probably extending the FCS losing streak of 7.

When an injured dog is down and need help all the other dogs will gather around that dog without support, then come all the stray in for vicious attach on that injured dog.

That's about like this Ole Miss blog. Rebels being that injured dog and needing help from its fans. JB

Wow! They teach clairvoyance at Moo U? Since that is a big word let me break it down for you coot. It means the ability to see things that haven't happened yet.

Let me look into my crystal ball here: Moo U will have 8 SEC losses this year, losing to THE University of Mississippi in the Egg Bowl and a 1 and 11 season...

Nah, Mullet will probably win 4 games this time while Freeze begins the rebulding of Ole Miss with 6 wins...

I have full confidence in Coach Freeze. He will rebuild the program the right way. I expect incremental improvement each year. For this year, it is reasonable to expect about 3 wins, and with a suprise or 2 in there, maybe 5.

On the other hand, Dan Mellon has already peaked, had a couple wins over some down teams in 2010. Won't be able to match the 9 win season this year. You hayseeds should be ecstatic with a 7-5 season.

Thank PA. Do you think Pendleton and Sawyer will be available by week 1? If not, that takes us down to 8 returning starters. Is that a SEC low?

Nephew: Have you heard why your WR coach quit and Brewster was hired? You may want to change your name before posting again to attempt to not look so...neckish

hey doc, try this math...14 straight SEC losses 8 more SEC losses = 22 straight SEC losses. And some of this math..Ole MIss former high school Girls basketball coach x players jumping ship, like rats on the Titanic - No talent on the roster- crappy fans = a 2 and 10 season with a loss to Central Arkansas and a 4th straight loss in the EGG BOWL...Salute!
