When Gregg Ellis and I changed beats for the 2002 football season I remember saying to someone that I was going to finally get to see elite quarterback play.

Mississippi State struggled for consistency at the position during my time on the beat, and Eli Manning was coming off a sophomore season in which he'd thrown 31 touchdowns with only nine interceptions.

However, that changed in Eli's junior season, my first year on the beat.

His efficiency rating of 125.57 and completion percentage of 58.0 were lows for his Ole Miss career, his 15 interceptions a career high. He threw 21 touchdown passes and averaged 261.6 passing yards a game.

That was a team that struggled in the run game and put Eli in position at times of trying to do too much. Ole Miss started five different tailbacks in 2002.

Overall, the passing numbers weren't bad but were less than expected for Eli Manning.

You know the rest of the story. Eli gave some thought to an early entry into the NFL but returned to Ole Miss for a dominant senior season, completing 62.4 percent of his passes for 3,600 yards, 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and an efficiency rating of 148.10.

I remember Les Miles, then the coach at Oklahoma State, commenting on the Manning-led drive in the fourth quarter of the Cotton Bowl that gave the Rebels a lead too large for the Cowboys to overcome. He kept remaking on the efficiency of the drive.

I thought that in a nutshell summed up Eli's time at Ole Miss … good numbers, strong numbers but more than anything else, efficient.

Ole Miss has been inconsistent at the position since Eli's departure. Jevan Snead had some really good games in 2008 and 2009 but was continually plagued by the INT bug.

The belief is that Hugh Freeze will sign and develop a high school quarterback as a multi-year starter, something that hasn't been done since Eli. The two commits are a good start in that direction.

Mantachie, the commits are Ryan Buchanan (passer) of Jackson and Devante Kincaid (mobile) of Dallas.

Maikhail Miller has a chance to play down the road. He's doing the right things right now, and that means having a good camp and earning the respect of his coaches. He would have to be extraordinary to get on the field right now. Too much time invested in Bo Wallace, Barry Brunetti.

Good luck to the Mustangs this season.

Ole Miss being compared to Kentucky not bad - Rebels must be really good in basketball. Go Rebs!!!

two guys on the radio were comparing Ole MIss to Kentucky today. They said that they could make a fortune if they made a reversible doormat. Kentucky on one side and Ole Miss on the other and when one side got dirty, you could just flip it over and you would still have a doormat. Those guys are crazy funny. RTR!

i think freeze will be around for a minimum of

4-5 yrs. i hope for success and 10 plus yrs. although there does seem to be a trend in college football of the fans becoming unsettled with coaches at around the 10 yr mark.

FYI, I hope that Freeze stays forever! The bulldogs will be wearing rings on their toes, having won so many consecutive EGG BOWLS.

I hope Coach F is around more than that.

I have a confidence in him. Like Cutcliffe I think He came to stay. Of course the Adm may cut it short like they did with coach c but hopefully he will win enough to keep him and by year 3-4 really be on the road to doing something at OLE Miss. If he wins he might be a long tenured coach. he says he wants to be there.

also PA who are the commits you talked about

Do you think Miller from Fulton could be a qb DOWN the road in a year or two. I never got over to see him play, Mustangs usually dont go over to Fulton except to ICC. I heard he had a good arm.

I know this isnt High school, but i beleive my mustangs may sumprise some folks. They played North Pontotoc close. The New coach makes them wear dress clothes game day. Makes them run on and off the field,They have not had that in years, much like the rebels.

Zombie, I think Hugh will be given lots of time based on the situation he has inherited and the fact that Ole Miss has turned over coaches so quickly that the administration would really like to establish stability in the position if possible.

In my opinion Eli was one of the best QB at Ole Miss that I can remember in my day. Also Eli had one of the best offensive mind coaches in David Cutcliffe, to support, advise and help him in his decision making on the playing field. I don't remember much about Charlie Conerly, but do remember Eagle Day, Bobby Franklin, Jake Gibbs, Norris Weese, Glynn Griffin, and the main man Archie. All big winners for the Rebels and made the offense go. O Forgot about John Forcade, a good offense, but NO defense. There another one name Ray somebody???? that beat Texas in the Sugar Bowl, but cannot remember his name. I hope Coach Freeze does good and make a winner out of the Rebels once again. Sorry to say, but he don't have much to work with now, but maybe he can recruit some homegrown talent. JB

I honestly see Freeze as a 2 to 3 year coach. One who can get us back on our feet, recruit well and fill the cupboards for the next coach. Very similar to what they did with Croom in Hooterville.
