Drawing on 20 years of beat writer memories sometimes you need a little help.

Sometimes help is good when you're drawing on one or two years, much less 20. So, kudos to Ben Garrett of The Ole Miss Spirit for a little refresher.

David Cutcliffe took over Tommy Tuberville's 1998 and coached his first game as the Rebels' new coach in the Independence Bowl against Texas Tech.

The Rebels were probably already ready going to win the game when Deuce McAllister iced it by returning an on-side kick for a touchdown. The final was 35-18.

Credit Ben Garrett for that memory.

I was covering Mississippi State at the time. What I remember about the Independence Bowl is that it was a late kickoff, as it often was back then, and the Cotton Bowl was the morning at 10.

Gene Phelps was our sports editor and columnist then. He covered Ole Miss in Shreveport, got out of there some time after midnight and drove to Dallas where he got a room somewhere on the perimeter and met me at the Cotton Bowl the next morning for MSU and Texas.

Baseball has its day-night doubleheader, but that was the first night-morning doubleheader.

Gene and his wife, Nancy, were already at the Cotton Bowl when I arrived.

Of course, if this had been That University Rebels Dislike, you would never know about that blister, because "We don't discuss injuries" ...

The lack of leadership at the QB position is a problem How do you sit out of a practice when competing for the starting role at QB, because of a blister? Heck, some of sport's greatest moments came from players who were injured. Kirk Gibson's HR on knees so bad, he barely rounded the bases. Kirk Shilling's bloody ankle as he beat the Yankees in LCS. Brett Favre breaking MNF records VS Raiders the night after his father died,(not an injury, but still). QB's in high school, college and NFL all play and practice with nagging and sometimes rather serious injuries. That's what you do when your team needs you! For Bo Wallace to sit out for a blister is puzzling, to say the least!

18 days till kickoff, Ole Miss Rebel football team will be facing the toughest obstacle and question that they probably have ever faced. Just when will the next win come, how effect will this team respond under all the pressure that has been place upon us by the sports media and our fans and competition, will we be able to win a SEC victory this season. WIll our season be a Winner!!! The rebels have a tough task ahead of them in 18 days. They must face it one game at a time and do their best, that's all is ask of them.
