I remember the summer of 1992, SEC Media Days. I was covering the event for The Meridian Star, and Billy Brewer had done what head coaches sometimes do after a losing season. He'd hired new coordinators.

The Rebels were coming off a 5-6 season in 1991, and Brewer had hired Larry Beckish for offense, Joe Lee Dunn for defense. Brewer stood at the podium that year, at the downtown Sheraton in Birmingham, and talked about both of them. He told us about a book Beckish had written on the trap option and on Dunn's unique personality, including the time he'd arrive at the office each day.

I remember writing that in an effort to turn things around, Brewer had hired an author and a maniac.

The Rebels did in fact turn things around in 1992, as the Brewer tenure began to wind down. Ole Miss went 8-3, then won the Liberty Bowl as Dunn's defense pitched its second shutout of the year, 13-0 against Air Force.

Four other times that season the Rebels held opponents to 10 points or below. One of those times was the Egg Bowl in Oxford. Mississippi State had what seemed like 39 chances to score from inside the 10 that day but was unable to get in the end zone, and the Rebels held on to win 17-10. That was a very cold day in Oxford, and I was covering as the MSU beat writer.

The Liberty Bowl that followed was the last bowl game Brewer would coach for Ole Miss. The Rebels went 6-5 in 1993, and he was fired amid the NCAA stuff.

Dunn was named interim coach for the 1994 season.

Dunn had replaced Robert Henry, a Corinth native, as defensive coordinator. Henry's name came up this week as I was working on our football guide and doing a feature on West Alabama coach Will Hall, who was a high school star at Amory before following his father, Bobby Hall, into the business.

Henry is beginning his third season as Hall's defensive coordinator.

Dunn is beginning his fourth season as defensive coordinator for former Kentucky coach Hal Mumme at Division III McMurry.

PA, I'm chuckling to myself as I consider your question to me, the guy who probably has the least football knowledge of any of your followers. Brown, from Thomasville, GA, was a defensive player, but not a safety or linebacker - I guess that would mean, defensive lineman. He was as tall, or taller than his team mates, maybe 6'5" or better - that's been a long time ago and I never got closer to him (that I was ever aware of) than my stadium seat 20 or so rows up - and likely weighed 270 /- 20 lbs. I remember thinking that he had pretty quick feet and if he had soft hands he could be a pretty good 3 or 4 player on court. It seems, in my faulty memory, during that long defensive stand he batted down a pass attempt (maybe two), was in the backfield on almost every play and was involved in several lost yardage plays. He may also have been called for one or more of the penalties which extended MSU's possession - weren't there about 11 consecutive MSU plays inside the 15 yard line? The visual memory which is most vivid was his foot pounding, emotion fueled, exaggerated stalk at the end of each defensive stop.

Football almost suplanted basketball as a favorite sport for me on that cold, wet day.

Sorry PA, that's about the best I can do.

Blus, Plump sounds right for that team. Joe Lee did the 11 guys standing up on the line thing for Tim Couch against Kentucky too. Didn't say in it long.

Biker, I was covering MSU then so I didn't know the Ole Miss players as well. Refresh me on Chad Brown. What did he do?

I'm more passionate about basketball than football, though passionate isn't exactly the correct word - it's a more enjoyable game for me. Having said that, I must admit that my most "caught up in the moment", electrifying experience as a sports spectator was the final defensive stand by the Ole Miss football team that 1992 Egg Bowl. My hair literally was standing on end. Chad Brown, from south Georgia, is the player whose name and image I always recollect in connection with those closing minutes.

Hey Parrish, was that the game where snow was flurrying and I believe Eric Plump was QB for MSTATE? If it was, I was at that game and saw Plump take the biggest hit I every saw any QB take.

My favorite Dunn Formation was the 11 men on the line of scrimmage against Eli and guess what happened? State got burned bad. Still liked him, though. Rubbing his belly and pretending to blow out smoke from his fist was a great signal. That dude was crazy.
