For the record, I tried unsuccessfully earlier this week to reach Dr. Jones on this matter. Here he talks about the campaign against athletics director Pete Boone about "threats" made against himself. He calls the campaign against Boone "uncivil" and calls on "every person who loves Ole Miss to denounce it in any way possible."

A bit of a programming note here. I am traveling today and will be checking the block when I can, but I'm not sure how much that will be until much later in the day.

- PA

Office of the Chancellor

University, MS 38677-1848

Dear Ole Miss Family,

The Ole Miss Creed begins: “The University of Mississippi is a community of learning dedicated to nurturing excellence in intellectual inquiry and personal character in an open and diverse environment. As a voluntary member of this community, I believe in respect for the dignity of each person; I believe in fairness and civility.”

These words say a lot about who we are as a university family. They establish that the excellence we seek in all aspects of university life rests on respect, dignity, fairness, and civility, and that we come together as a community. Further, we commit to being open with one another and valuing personal character. These words represent important Ole Miss values. Robust debates and disagreements always have taken place at institutions such as Ole Miss. The current controversy in athletics has gone beyond that.

Many are aware of anonymous, malicious and public attacks on athletics director Pete Boone. The Ole Miss family may not be aware, however, that as a part of this orchestrated campaign, I have received threats, promising that if I do not remove Pete Boone, "It is going to get real ugly," and threatening to expand the attacks to other athletics employees.

Friends, supporters and the media have asked how I will react to this anonymous and vicious pressure. The short answer is that I will not react.

To maintain accreditation, the university must remain “free from undue influence from political, religious and other external bodies.” I would be less than the chancellor Ole Miss needs if I reacted to these polarizing tactics employed by anonymous critics. To do so would not only threaten the university’s accreditation, but it also would impair future university leaders by encouraging others to use such tactics to achieve personal, political or unsavory agendas or to harm the university.

As a university, we are committed to excellence in all things—including athletics. I regularly review the performance of all those who report to me, including Mr. Boone. But I cannot and will not engage in any sort of review in response to a public campaign to force his removal.

A debate worthy of attention is about who we are as a university family. Will we remain civil, reasonable people? Will we respect the dignity of each person? I believe we will. We know what our values are.

The current campaign against the university and its athletic leadership is uncivil. It is not in the spirit of the Ole Miss family. It hinders the goals set forth in the Creed and is not in the interest of our university. I call on those involved in the campaign to stop, and I call on every person who loves Ole Miss to denounce it in every way possible.

Dan Jones, Chancellor

The University of Mississippi

rebchris, that was sort of my point. Jones wasn't here when we got rid of Col. Reb. He was obviously a part of the initiative to get a new mascot. There's been a lot of talk about how that process was mishandled but I don't necessarily blame him nor can I think of a better way to come up with a mascot for a university with thousands of students and alums. (and I'm not a fan of the bear but it doesn't matter now).

turfguy, you're probably right. Deep pockets make decisions. Unfortunately it's like that in many aspects of life. But, true fans will never stop supporting the team. Don't forget we're talking about a bunch of 18-22 year old kids who came to this university to be a part of ole miss. It is unfair to those kids to be put in the middle of this mess and certainly unfair to be unsupportive of them. So fans, go to the games; cheer for the players; don't boo, even if it is directed toward the coaches or ad; support your university and the players who chose to join us and be a part of OM. The rest will take care of itself.

I am afraid that changes will only be made when the dudes that make the donations demand it. They have leverage over all who have positions at the university. The fans really can't make it happen. Maybe if 95% of the fans would stop supporting, but that just will not happen. So, it is up the movers and shakers of the program to make the call. A golf outing at Memphis C. C. and a decision could be made then.

jjreb, i agree with you. i think dan jones should not be in the conversation of "hot seat" in regards to the sports team. my problem with jones, boone, etc.. is not listening to the public opinion. even though they got rid of a beloved mascot, if they would have been more transparent it would have been better. i sat on the oxford square with a notebook and pen petitioning to save colonel reb back around 2003 but the damage has been done now and there is no going back. i personally am kinda glad the forward rebels group has expressed some public opposition since they will not listen any other way.

Did it strike anyone else as odd that the Chancellor's promise not to react to the Forward Rebels statements looked an awful lot like a reaction? I have a lot of respect for Chancellor Jones and wish he would have refrained from getting mixed up in this public battle. PA, do you have any idea why he felt obligated to make this public statement? I think Jones' job is safe and think it's absurd that people are calling for his firing because of our football team. I know people are upset about the mascot and Dixie but those decisions were put into motion long before Jones became chancellor.

Let's get P.A. to conduct an informal poll here on the blog. It would be interesting to see the results. I think it should be a poll open to all college football fans, especially the fans in Mississippi.

When I read the responses from the Daily Journal and another Mississippi paper, it seems a majority of the responses are Forward Rebel leaning vs Pro Ole Miss administration. A rough estimate is about 10 responses in favor of administrative change vs 2 responses against administrative change. I just wonder if this is accurate of the Ole Miss fan base as a whole, or if it is skewed somewhere. That is about 75-80, which is a really large percent.

BBR: "Nutt has been around a long time, I don't think he all of a sudden forgot how to coach."

You obviously do not know any Arkansas fans then. I don't think any of them thought he could coach when he was still at their school. To me last year it was like Nutt had lost the drive to coach and had no energy. I haven't noticed how he was coaching this year though.

As for higher administration - there needs to be a turn around every certain number of years IMO.

Don't get mad at the administration because the players aren't getting it done on the field. We have great facilies and have had good recruiting classes. The fact of the matter is that the players aren't executing plus the amount of young players on the team are the reason they have been losing. Nutt has been around a long time, I don't think he all of a sudden forgot how to coach. The ads by forward rebels just makes Ole Miss look worse.

What is going on truly is uncivil, and it is destructive. Unfortunately it mirrors our culture. The anonymity of the internet encourages such stuff, which I liken to ugly writing on the craphouse wall. A wise neighbor once observed that "..opinions are like butt holes, not all will hold air, but that a fellow ought to at least try!"

you talk about out of touch with reality ... Mr Jones you and your buddies better grow some thick skin, especially if you are going to change at a whim what a considerable portion of your alumni and fans appreciate about the university.
