Wrapping up an unusual Monday presser. …

Ole Miss AD Pete Boone said he met with Houston Nutt on Sunday and later met with the assistant coaches too.

He said he wanted to clear the air, get out of the way and let the coaches coach.

Boone: “I asked Houston if I could talk to the coaches. You know at times like this, I've been around them before, all of a sudden things get a little tentative. We talked about egg shells before. I don't want our coaches walking around on egg shells if they see me, start looking down or looking off somewhere. I want us to step on some eggs. I want us to come out with some fight and some fire. To the extent I can eliminate any barrier that they have to think about during the day and let them focus on coaching and motivating players, I want to try to do that.”

Prior to that he told Nutt he wanted to see more more passion from the team. He said he didn't talk strategy with Nutt.

For his part, Nutt said, “We'll get the right attitude. That wasn't it Saturday. I understand. It's a bad vibe right now.”

The vibe is all about offense. Nutt believes the defense and special teams have played at a level capable of winning games.

As soon as David Lee was hired as offensive coordinator in January, Nutt said he was turning over play-calling duties to Lee.

That hasn't changed, he said, but added, “I will be more involved, especially on offense.”

Nutt was asked if he felt like he was coaching for his job, and he said he's felt like that every day for 14 years.

Nutt: “I want to win for our fans, our players. I don't want our fans to give up on this team. We have 33 freshmen or redshirts playing. I've been here before, and I understand what it takes.”

Regarding the other half of Boone's day, the Forward Rebels ads, the AD had this to say: “I saw the ad. I've been in the business close to 15 years. I'm not paying that much attention to it. There are things that are more important to me than that. We've got a big program here. We've got 350 athletes. We've got a total payroll of … I guess you can count an athlete on payroll now since they're talking about spending some extra money on them, but we've got about 500 or 600 people here that are taking care of the Ole Miss program. That's where my focus is, always has been and always will be.”

Boone said he doesn't consider himself arrogant or overconfident, but he doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about what fans think of him. That would take away time that he should be spending on the department, he said.

Not much by way of daily information, but Nutt did say that backup QB Randall Mackey was properly diagnosed with a thigh bruise and not something worse. Mackey will practice this week and play Saturday at Georgia.

He also said Nick Brassell is primarily defense now and will have an expanded role in the Georgia game.

The quote of the day came from starting quarterback Zack Stoudt, who threw five interceptions in his SEC debut. Nutt met with Stoudt and encouraged him, telling him not all the picks were his fault. It wasn't a good Saturday and Sunday for Stoudt. He said: “It's not OK to lose. I couldn't sleep at all last night or Saturday. I'm not OK with that. We as players need to realize that, wake up and start making some plays.”

I don't see any indication that elite black athletes don't want to go to Ole Miss - Dexter McCluster, Patrick Willis,Deuce McAllister, Peria Jerry, etc...?

And I don't believe that Boone wants Ole Miss to fail. But I don't see any sign that he knows what he's doing and now with this I'm starting to think he's interfering a lot more than maybe anybody suspected. I've never seen a Nutt team look so dead and unmotivated before. During games last year while losing the TV cameras showed players on the bench and sidelines yawning and chatting with each other like it was a picnic. Something is definitely wrong.

And Matt Hall had several plays Saturday where he never even touched a Vandy player. What's up with that????

They are throwing Urban Meyers name around as well. Urban is smarter than that and if you ask me he's washed up as a coach in this conference. How many coaches have left from one school in the sec after being fired or resigning and come back and be where they left off. None. He and the gators were back falling after the loss of mighty Tebow. He won't ever win in this conference again. Washed up ex sec coaches never make the second go around.

Pete Boone is a cowardly douche bag. You for one don't just come into your coaches weekly press conference. He's scared that it's his seat that's hot and is trying to protect it anyway possible. We've kicked his a__ out once before in 98 lets kick his a__ out for good this time. Dan Jones a khyatt have to go as well. They all have had a hand in killing this university, stripping it from all its beloved traditions. Heck even leach when asked about coaching again said he will coach again someday but it will be a place where the administration was intact and was together on things. Well he won't be coming to OLE MISS. Neither will the names like Gus Malzahn, Skip Holtz. They see what they're doing to this place and won't touch it and I for one don't blame them. Something has got to change or we can keep watching her crumble. I do believe in Nutt and staff to make something of the year. Our administration has to be rebuilt.

To atmason. You didn't attend the spring game to see 7 elite black players who were honored there. Some former NFL some current and one soon to be. That's what all the other schools tell black players about OLe Miss. But the fact is Nowbody in the nation has done more to right some wrongs than OleMiss, you can't change history, you learn from it. Ask B B King where he left all his memories, how many statues of blacks are on campuses in the USA. Your comment is BS

About 1970, SEC teams start recruiting black players......except Ole Miss. Elite black athlete will not consider ANY place named OLE MISS REBELS....duh! 2011, and the one's that UM could get would rather go to JUCO and then pro's. Ole Miss will never be a winner till Colonel Rebel is destroyed forever.

I fully agree. Ole Miss has a lot of good players and coaches. Boone and Jones do not give a hill of beans about Ole Miss football. Plain and simple. In my opinion neither of their jobs involved taking tradition away from Ole Miss. The Ole Miss band had the most amazing pre-game show that even fans from opposing teams loved. Jones took Dixie away and that was wrong. Then they had an unfair election for a mascot by leaving Colonel Reb off the ballot. Jones and Boone have to go in order for Ole Miss to get back to the status it once was.

I love Ole Miss. I was born and raised in Oxford. I support Coach Nutt. I believe he can win consistently. I truly believe that Pete Boone and Dan Jones need to go. I believe in my heart that neither one of them has the best interest of Ole Miss in mind. They both have an agenda and are using their positions there to push them.

This team needs to get some fire in their belly. All is not lost. I've seen a lot of Rebel games in my life and I've seen teams bounce back from problems like these. Stoudt is right...players need to start making plays....putting forth extra effort unlike the feeble attempt to catch a pass like Derrick Herman.

Remember fans...a guy who has his number retired at Ole Miss once had 5 interceptions in a game against Tennessee. But fans never backed off support for him. His name was Archie Manning. Get behind our Rebels...there are 9 regular season games left in this season.
