Notes and observations from Alabama's 52-7 win over Ole Miss. Really, it wasn't as close as the score indicates. ...

There were many ways to highlight the differences between Ole Miss and Alabama last night, one being simply the final score, but I found this one to be interesting. Alabama rushed for 389 yards in the game. Given the fact that the Crimson Tide gives up just 39.83 rushing yards a game – an average lowered now by the fact that Ole Miss rushed for only 28 yards – it would take Alabama almost 11 games to surrender the rushing yards that Ole Miss gave up last night. That's almost an entire season.

The Rebels were giving up 193 rushing yards a game. Alabama doubled that.

Yes, it's a really good running game for Alabama, and yes Trent Richardson's a great back, but you've got to be better than what Ole Miss is showing against the run to compete. Not just to compete in the SEC, just to compete period. This is the same defense that gave up more than 200 rushing yards to Southern Illinois.

Pieces and parts were moved around to try and compete better. Defensive tackle Uriah Grant moved out to defensive end. Grant did not register a tackle, but beyond end Wayne Dorsey – whose season and career are likely over after he sustained a broken arm in the fourth quarter – few defensive linemen did.  Dorsey had four tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss. Only three other tackles were credited to Ole Miss defensive linemen, one each for Justin Smith, Carlton Martin and Bryon Bennett.

Richardson was the star with 183 rushing yards – He broke more tackles on one 76-yard run than the Ole Miss defensive line interior had for the night – but Alabama's third-string back had 125 yards. Jalston Fowler was averaging just 29.5 yards a game going in.

The Rebels were outgained 615-141, and that just goes back to the two elements that separate football teams: Strength and speed.

Alabama has an abundance of both which allows it to compete at a championship level.

Ole Miss has speed in the secondary, speed at wide receiver and running back, but Alabama has just as much speed on defense. Randall Mackey had gained a few yards scrambling, but at one point last night Mackey got out on the edge. He was 1-on-1 with a defensive lineman, I forget who at this point, but the lineman just ran straight at him for a sack. Ordinarily, the quarterback can make a guy miss in that situation, but not this time.

There were other times when Ole Miss receivers on a crossing pattern would be guarded step-for-step by linebackers or caught from behind.

The Rebels tried to do some different things, showed a couple of plays Alabama hadn't seen, one with Barry Brunetti at quarterback, but those were defended too.

There were the obligatory questions afterward about suspended running back Brandon Bolden and whether he would have made a difference. He would not.

For a team that spent the two weeks after the Fresno State game talking about becoming more physical, Saturday night was a test it was destined to fail.

Perhaps it can show itself more physical against a few other teams on the schedule. Maybe that's this week against an Arkansas team that doesn't rank in the NCAA top 80 in rushing or stopping the run.

Improvement for Ole Miss, however, will depend to a degree on how it responds mentally to a week that included the suspension of its best offensive player on Thursday then the brutal beat down that followed two days later.

It's a loss that will have long-lasting effects too, as defensive starters Dorsey and Marcus

Temple (broken ankle), are likely done for the year.

Prior to last night's game I gave the Rebels a fair chance for an SEC win at Kentucky, but that looks far more problematic now.

Ole Miss has lost nine straight in the SEC and is 1-11 in its last 12 SEC games dating back to its 41-27 loss at Mississippi State in 2009.

The rest of the SEC schedule won't be as physically formidable as Alabama, but LSU will be.

NMIS: What is it that the "Bama" guy said that was so wrong? Or is it just that he IS a Bama fan. Everything that he posted was right in my opinion (of course we all know about opinions ;0)

Wow....that was an old-fashioned butt kicking. Other than the running backs from Bama running through all our arm tackles, we were getting zero pressure on the QB. Put those two things together and a 50 point blowout is pretty much assured. I do think we have talent on this team, especially with the young guys. Playcalling seemed pretty suspect to me. Whatever happened to quick hitters over the middle or in the flat, especially when your QB is running for his life. Bama, though, did like like an NFL team. Give them credit......maybe we'll do better against Arkansas.

i know this is very premature and will probably not equate to anything, but in terms of a future head coach, i say go after no one that is not a proven winner as a head coach. too many things can go wrong with unproven coordinators. after coach brewer, ole miss has had 1 "proven" head coach to run the program-that being Nutt. The problem with Ole Miss is the entire mind set of settling for mediocrity. Ole Miss should find a Chris Peterson type coach and pay them well. Ole Miss has alot to offer, if we could get the right leadership that would see it.

Rich Rod is a terrible idea. He was good only as long as he had Pat White. In fact, White wasn't even the starter until Bednarik was injured. He was a jerk on the sidelines and was abusive to players, Worst of all, he screwed his alma mater for the promise of more money.

I can't speak for Leach, other than what was reported in the media.

Go post on a "Bama" website or somewhere. I don't go to Bama websites or Arkansas websites or Tennessee websites and tell so and so my opinion. Bama's got a lot of fans because they win. It takes a lot to love a team (and the school you graduated from) and suffer through hard times. It's even tougher hearing the the folks who ride the Bama wagon (or LSU, or Auburn wagon) because they win. Sure they win and everyone knows why. Look how much money they have. That's it in a "Nutt" shell. So no matter how bad our little Ole Miss team does, I'll never be one of those kind of people who like to jump on other folks' bandwagon. So let's keep it Ole Miss here and let's let Ole Miss fans do the talking. Doesn't Bama have enough blogs to post on? So please go post there. In the meantime let's get a new Coach. Will the real Kent Austin please stand-up?

NMISS- You can't figure out why these last 2 years are so bad?

I'll try and make it simple:

1. Nutt was left a lot of talent in your 2 deep especially in the defensive front 7. Orgeron also left Mike Wallace, McCluster and a good SEC qb in Snead.

2. Nutt took over the offense. The man has never been able to develop a qb and most regress under him. Snead regressed and now you've had 2 years of qb disarray. This is what Archie signed you up for when he chose Nutt. Nutt forced out Austin and in high comedy brought in yes men in Rader and Lee.

3. Nutt's heart isn't in this job. He was fired from his dream job. Now he is just getting a huge paycheck and gets a chance at revenge once a season.

Archie has sat next to Brando for too long. Brando is a huge Nutt fan and Archie believed the nonsense. He is the one who helped orchestrate Nutt to Ole Miss and you should make him pay for part of the buyout.

I hope you keep Nutt. He isn't good enough nor does he have the desire to fix what is wrong with Ole Miss football.

Houston Nutt a good coach? He was good when he had Felix Jones, Darren McFadden, Peyton Hillis and Matt Jones at Arkansas. He was decent when he had Jevan Sneed, before he ruined Sneed. That is it. Nutt is a con man, plain and simple. He has robbed the Ole Miss bank and if he is allowd to remain, then we should all boycott next season! I will not drive three and a half hours to see the Rebs, if he coaches next season.

yep, I thought they had a chance and still support them. Coach Nutt is a good coach and a winner. Ole Miss Had problems way before Houton Nutt came to Oxford. It Is possible those problems still exist up there from their losing records over the past. JUST Take a look at mens basketball and baseball programs!!!!

The Johnny REBS will have recruits and long lived just not up at the U of Miss.

Don't think they will fire coach NUTT that would mean that some higher ups should go as well.

'08 may have been Saban's first year. If it was, he was busy cleaning up Shula's mess.

I just named Rich Rod and Mike Leach, because they were the 1st names that came to mind. If I were making a list, I would be looking for up and coming offensive coordinators. You have to give Gus Malzan a call, just to see. The rebel bears do have talent and it is being wasted. Houston Nutt had a couple of good years, because Bama had scholarship reductions and was coached by an idiot named Shula, Arkansas was recovering from the mess Nutt left behind, State was Croomed, Tuberville had run Auburn down the drain, so the only competition was LSU. Nutt just had good timing. That is it in a "NUTT SHELL".

rebelchris, there were a few (churn for example), who actally thought the fighting Nutts could win. If Nutt isn't fired by the time church is out, then something is wrong. The Johnny Rebs won't have a recruit left, if something isn't done soon. Nutt must go now,to show the recruits that positive changes are being made. Write the check and hope it won't bounce. Somebody do something, because there are no more wins for the Rebs this season, only more embarrassing outcomes.

I was at the game. I knew what was going to come in the second half, so I left mid-game. Houston Nutt did a great job his first two years at Ole Miss. I just can't figure out why these past two years are so bad for him. All that I can come up with is that we need new leadership at the coaching position. The players don't seem to be a cohesive unit like they were a couple of years back. You can tell that there is talent on the team but no cohesion. Only a coach can foster that kind of environment. I'm going to pitch in a name of who I think needs to be our next head coach....Kent Austin.

I've never quit on Houston Nutt but after last nights game I'm finding it very hard to defend him and the coaches. Can anyone tell me what kind of offensive we're running??? Has anyone ever heard of a hot route??? I saw this happen many times last night, it's simple mechanics, if a CB is blitzing from the slot receiver position, the QB needs to signal that receiver that he is the hot route and he should run a slant or some kind of short pattern to get the ball out of the hands of the QB quickly. Every time that happened last night the WRs were running routes that take 4-5 seconds to develop. No wonder Alabama kept coming at us, there was no reason for them to back off the blitz because we weren't doing anything to counter it. As far as the defense goes, I hate zone coverage because it's easy to beat. When Alabama wasn't running the ball down our throats there WRs would just sit down in the hole of zone coverage and wait for the ball, we made McCarron look like a Heisman Candidate. Maybe they run zone because we don't have the athletes to run man. The tackling is mediocre at best, One thing I've noticed about Alabama and LSU is that they fly to the ball and they finish the tackle when they get there. The WRs/RBs had a five yard head start before they were even touched by one of our defenders. This team lacks serious character and heart. I honestly don't know where we go from here and on a side note, if Rich Rodriguez and Mike Leach are our best options for new coaches it's gonna be a long couple of years...

no one predicted ole miss to win, but the problem at this point goes way beyond lossing to alabama. we are not even able to compete with vanderbilt. this season and last are probably the worse teams in ole miss history; literally.

Earlier in the week, I had predicted a 52 to 15 score. I didn't think the offense would score a touchdown, though. The Fighting Nutts are done. Look at the stats of the other teams left to play. La Tech is better than Kentucky. It is time to FIRE Nutt! It's all about keeping the recruits believing in the program. Go out and get some energy, like Rich Rodriquez or Mike Leach. Do something positive or lose our recruits. It may be too late, anyway. The most humiliating loss since JAX STATE, in my opinion.
