The Rebels are back on the practice field this morning at 9:45 and again this afternoon at 5:15, the second of four two-a-days.

I will not be in Oxford today but will have an update from Hayden Sowers on the blog following the evening workout.

Week 1 of Camp Wilderness concludes with a scrimmage tomorrow morning. We will have notes and analysis here following the scrimmage.

The offense has shown signs of improvement late this week. THe big question this time of year when one unit has the upper hand in workouts is: Do you have a good defense or a bad offense?

Do you think Ole Miss, in Hugh Freeze's first year, will develop a "defensive personality" and grow into a very competitive unit on that side of the ball? Will it be a defense that can carry the offense?

Do you see a path to six wins for this team?

I'll be out and about running errands and performing other domestic tasks today, and I'll be checking the blog along the way.

If you have a question or comment about the first week of practice leave it here.

Churn... ignore those fanboys...they would lap up anything jones and his crew dishes out.... if i remember right all we had to do was get rid of the flag and national championships would come rolling in . Now they sacrifice the Col to the gods of political correctness and what do we get, more embarrassment.

I agree Deacon, that flag had to go, the university is a school for all not just for a select few. I worked with many engineers during my Navy time, some from Miss State very good and capable in their jobs and design, it was my pleasure to have been on their team..

Churn, Mstate would have loved to have someone like you as a fan. You are strong in your beliefs and steadfast in tradition! I agree totally about what happened to the Colonel. That's when I lost all respect for the blackbears. That's why I poke at Ole Miss every chance I get. I understood that the Confederate Flag had to go for what "some people" claimed it represented. But they banished Colonel Reb, well for me that was just stupid! All he represented was OLE MISS! When I tought of Ole Miss, I thought of Colonel Reb. He was an iconic figure who was a huge part of SEC football, heck of southern tradition. MSTATE fought and is still fighting to keep their cowbell as part of their tradition. It was a "jellyfish" move to get rid of the Colonel. You think of Mstate, you think of cowbells, you think of Alabama, you think elephant, you think of Ole Miss, you think of blackbears?

I think if you remember it was Gators baseball, but yes FSU is one of the top college football team in the country to my liken and they are very strong, but they are ACC I'M SEC, so, I do like the chances of the Gators this season, they are rebuilding, as Ole Miss but doing a much better job at it. Gators have no problem in recruitment and try to stay away from those that are potential county farm workers. I was once a big Ole Miss Rebel fan, but its fading fast. I almost became a MSU Maroon and or a Florida Gator once after my days at Agri School at Northwest Miss, but opted for the USAF instead. I still retained my like for the Ole Miss Rebels until they put old Col Reb up before the firing squad and adopted a creature from the wilderness, a black bear, as their mascot. So I guess that is why we hear so much from Mr freeze about the wilderness. Ole Miss deserves what they get because they did it to themselves.

Is this the same Churn/JB that a few months ago, declared he was not an Ole Miss fan anymore and he was sticking with FSU? Don't hide your head in the sand just yet JB, regardless of how many Southwestern conference teams are on the schedule. 4 SEC games on the schedule are vs weaker teams, but I'm sure you noticed that.

07' Rebels went 3-8. 08' Rebels won 9 games and had 4 PREseason all-conference players.

12' Rebels only have 1 player that was PREseason 3rd team, All-SEC. Maybe some players will make a jump this year?

I just went over that Ole Miss schedule, and to be truthful I don't see a SEC victory for the Rebels on it. two of those old SWC power houses, actually three throw in Arkansas to compete with, Bad, Bad, So its going to be a very hot and dry and unproductive autumn harvest for Rebels this season. All you can hope for is an early frost to kill off some of the weeds that will be in your reaping.

That Ole Miss mens sports teams could and should learn and take a lessons from the Lady Rebel teams, they are winners.

There was a heckuva lot more talent on that 08 team, than there is now! Believing is one thing, but c'mon, man. THere were what 5 NFL players on the 08 team? The talent on this roster couldn't play for an arena league team. Churn is a wise man. He has been around to see the best of Ole Miss football and the worst of blackbear football. You should listen to Churn. He just makes sense. The good news is..it can't get a whole lot worse. The bottom is about to be hit.

Wild Rebel I am not implying interest from Ole Miss, but someone will welcome Tyrann Mathieu. It may work out, it may not. It will depend on what he learns from this humbling experience.

if Mathieu was to transfer to Oxford, then he could change his name to the Honey Bear! can't get enough of those super sugar smacks!

I think he can still be drafted in the NFL's supplemental draft?

What the blackbears need is some "tackling fuel". My mmmmommma said that fooseball is de devil. The Honeybadger would fit in with the blackbears. Freeze could give animal names to all the players and we could call him the "ZOO KEEPER".

The Turtleman is still has hopes that Ward won't get clear. The Turtleman wants to play real bad!

I agree, Chris. I think we had much better talent the last two years than what we saw on the field. I don't know why we didn't see it, but it falls on the coach to motivate the team to play. I think of the La Tech game, which was the first game after the announcement that Coach Nutt would not be back. I thought for sure the team would come out fighting for him, not to mention the fact that it was a weaker opponent.

When the team came out of the tunnel I could tell there was no motivation in them. Let's hope Freeze and Co can light a fire under the team and steal a few wins this year.

And PA, I hope you're not implying interest in Mathieu on the part of OM. I hope we are done taking in other teams' leftovers. He may very well be the best defensive player in college football, but as far as I'm concerned he can spend the rest of his college career at an FCS school!

Churn,

What negative reports are you referring to ? I would say since the season has not even started you might want to wait and pass judgement on what actually transpires on the field. We have had enough problems without all the ranting and ravening on here everyday by you about past and such. Be positive hell my momma always said if you can`t say something nice say nothing AT ALL !!! We had two good years with Nutt and won 18 games but we have regressed into a funk that we must come out of and we will !!.But just continueing to make baseless comments on here hurts us as well as gets very old day in and day out. Be patient please.

Honey Badger has been dismissed from the team at LSU for violation of team rules. He is expected to transfer somewhere.

Earlier this summer Tyrann Mathieu proclaimed himself the best defensive player in college football.

Chris, I think the effort looked different in that game when it became clear that Kentucky was going to play all the way.

I had high hope for the Rebels this season, but after seeing all these negative reports on them guess it is a hopeless case and a waste of my time. I thought with a new coaching staff AD and all, it would be better, but seems to be no change, but even worse. So guess Mr Boone and Nutt was not the evil ones and making losers out of the Rebels.

ive expressed it few other times, but i think the teams from the past two years could have been better than they performed. i saw many games that appeared obvious to me that the players were not giving it there all. i am ok with a loss if we play hard and compete. i am not ok with lossing the way we have the past few years. the kentucky game last year comes to mind when i think of a team that did not give it their all. i could tell from my seat in the stands that the players were putting forth a half effort. it seemed like they had betted money against themselves and just didnt try. i could see 5 or 6 wins.

Claw, I agree. Four wins would be a sign of improvement, provided they're competitive the rest of the way. Can't have any more 52-7s. Compete for 60 minutes is what Freeze is preaching. I think you'll see that, but if they can win the ones they're supposed to, break the SEC streak and be competitive in the rest, I think there will be a lot of positive energy around this team for 2013. If they're competitive in "the rest" maybe they pick off another win.

Based on last year it's hard to imagine either unit being equipped to carry the team.

Defense has looked pretty strong this week. You have to keep in mind that the offense is not that strong right now.

There's a lot of speed on the field for the defense, but Dave Wommack has expressed concern about the size of some of his safeties and what happens when certain running backs get loose in the second level of the defense.

As with most positions, there's not a lot of depth. They need health everywhere, particularly corner. Those guys are hard to come by, and they're going to play three at a time, moving one inside as the Husky.

Ready or not, the defense will have to step up, if the blackbears are going to win at all. There are just too many parts to get running smoothly on offense to expect them to take the lead. O-line and QB play are the last ones to come around.

The path that leads out of the wilderness and into the land of milk and honey, in this case 6 games, is redoubtable and treacherous. If the blackbears win 4 games, that would most likely mean that the streak gets broken and that would be a huge success and prove that the path taken is the correct one!
