No tears for Brittney Reese this time.

The former Ole Miss standout, one a reluctant track star who preferred basketball, Reese earned her first Olympic medal -- the gold -- after a fifth-place finish in Beijing in 2008.

Reese jumped 7.12 meters on her second attempt. Only silver medalist Elena Sokolova of Russia also surpassed 7 meters, finishing at 7.07. Reese's US teammate Janay DeLoach moved into third place late in the event with a 6.89 meter jump and earned the bronze.

Reese's jump was the best in Olympic competition since the Atlanta Game in 1996.

Ole Miss sprinter Isiah Young did not qualify for the final in the men's 200 meters.

Brittney is to be congratulated on her Gold medal award as other SEC performers in the Olympic that has won medals.
