Basketball starts Thursday at 6 with an exhibition against North Alabama.

There's a lot of enthusiasm for this team, and a common theme for the Rebels at this point seems to be athleticism, wingspan, and effort on defense. That's good news for a team that ranked 11th in the SEC last year in scoring defense, giving up 69.1 points a game.

We'll see if early enthusiasm equates to success on the floor as the Rebels replace the program's third-leading scorer, Chris Warren, and will rely on newcomers to play big roles in the backcourt.

Newcomers will also contribute to the team's athleticism and defensive potential. Aaron Jones and Jelan Kendrick are 6-8 and 6-7. Terrance Henry is 6-9 and he moves out to the 3. That's a lot of hands in the passing lanes, tipped balls and disruption for the opposing offense. Potentially.

"Focus" and "locked in" are the buzz words for this team right now, one that is tired of coming close to the NCAA tournament the veterans say. If that's in fact true you would think the effort and intensity that it takes to play successful defense would be in place more nights than not. You play 35 games you're going to have an off night here and there. The teams that limit those off nights can take the next step.

That's what it will take for this team to take the next step. Terrance Henry says it's going to happen, that the NCAA drought ends this season.

It's a confident group that will take the floor against UNA later this week and will open the regular season Nov. 11 against Louisiana-Monroe. (The alma mater was once known as Northeast Louisiana.)

JB, I wasn't offended at all, just expressing my opinion about reinstating the colonel. I think you and I can agree to disagree w/o being disagreeable.

sorry Biker, I did not intend to offend you, I am frequently outspoken at time and get under the skin of some but not intentionally. i had thought about taking off Westward to the wilderness of Idaho, but a stroke put that on hold for the meantime.

anyway, sorry about the black bear thing - that university can collect all the black bears the wish to - go luck to them - they keep up this losing thing in football an they will not have a recruit interested in attending that UNIVERSITY OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

have a good day the best to you.

Yeah!! Bball just around the corner! I'm really hyped about the prospects for this team & think they may go a long way - of course I'm always optomistic.

JB, I hold you in high regard, but I must partially disagree with you on the bear/the colonel. I'm not emotionally attached to either. I don't care if the bear is dispensed with or not. But I doubt if we'll ever see the colonel again, and I think that's a good thing. Every Ole Miss coach I knew during my 15 years in Oxford believed him to be a detriment to recruiting.

Now, I'm jumping in my bunker in anticipation of incoming!! Not from you, of course.

Sounds like good news for the basketball team this coming season, perhaps they can restore a winning spirit in the hearts of Rebel fans.

One thing that I am going to say and probably get kicked off this blog, but I AM GOING TO SAY IT ANY WAY.. GET RID OF THAT DAM--ED BLACK BEAR AND BRING BACK OLE COL REB. THAT BLACK BEAR THING IS A DISGRACE TO OLE MISS REBELS FANS!!!!!!!OR IT IS TO ME. ITS HALLOWEEN NIGHT AND THAT THING COULD BE ON PROWL ALL NIGHT.
