Spanning the SEC globe on a Monday morning. ...
From Baton Rouge, The Advocate's take on LSU-Ole Miss Game 3. It was the best offensive game in SEC play for the Tigers, but coach Paul Maineri said his freshman pitcher, Aaron Nola, was the key to the day's success.
More on the LSU-Ole Miss series. Here's video of Dylan Chavez talking about his start, three innings, in the Sunday loss. It wasn't a quality start, but the game was not out of hand when Chavez left after three innings with the Rebels trailing 3-2. Technical issues kept the Chavez video from appearing with Sunday's postgame update.
As June approaches a number of SEC players are expected to be early picks in the MLB draft. This story talks mostly of pitchers, though second baseman Alex Yarbrough is considered the Rebels' top prospect.
The big thing to watch for Ole Miss in the draft will be the number of 2013 signees selected and how many of those the Rebels can get to postpone the minor leagues and enroll in school.
With six games left, here's what the SEC looks like.
East
South Carolina 16-8
Kentucky 15-9
Florida 14-10
Georgia 12-12
Vanderbilt 11-13
Tennessee 8-16
West
LSU 16-8
Arkansas 12-12
MSU 12-12
Ole Miss 11-13
Auburn 10-14
Alabama 7-17
South Carolina has gone 9-1 in its last 10 and surged ahead of Kentucky and Florida in the East. Tennessee (which visits Ole Miss this weekend) and Alabama appear to be the most likely candidates to be left out of the new 10-team SEC tournament.
Tennessee, one would think, would be motivated to improve its lot in life in Oxford. The Rebels have a three-game lead on the Vols, four on Alabama. Ole Miss leads Auburn by a game, but Auburn has the tie-breaker if that comes into play.
It would benefit Ole Miss to gather itself and win as many as it can against the Vols before going on the road for the finish at Vanderbilt, which appears to be playing better. The Dores have won four of their last five to post consecutive series wins against Kentucky and Tennessee.
GO Gators!!!
