Rested and ready ...

And that's a good thing, because August is here. It's a long and hot month, but when it's finished we're into the college football routine.

I was in Destin last week and while drifting chest-deep in the surf three days since my last shave and with a cap pulled low, I met a Daily Journal reader.

Football season will soon be here, he remarked. My response to that is always, it's here right now. For all practical purposes it is.

Camps begin this week. For Ole Miss, what can only be dubbed "Camp Wilderness," begins Saturday. Newcomers and veterans officially come under the eye of the coaching staff when they sign in on Thursday. This used to be known as report day. There's no media opportunity on Thursday. The first day we will speak to Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze and his players will be Friday at the campus media day.

So, football is here.

In other news ...

There's an All-SEC RB on the market right now, but interested teams would have to be willing to give former Auburn star Michael Dyer a third chance. That's a lot of people helping. Arkansas State announced on Sunday that Dyer, who had rejoined Gus Malzahn, his Auburn offensive coordinator in Jonesboro, has been dismissed from the team.

This ArkansasSports360.com report cites that Jonesboro Sun in noting that Dyer's dismissal could be related to a March traffic stop. ...

Reports from Baton Rouge and New Orleans says LSU could be about to land a Penn State player who could transfer and play immediately following last week's announcement of NCAA santions against the program. However, quarterback Rob Bolden doesn't have game-changer numbers. He would immediately be cast into a back-up role for starter Zach Mettenberger, but Bolden would provide game experience currently lacking.

There have been no reported transfers of high-profile Penn State players.

Also from Baton Rouge, a summary of SEC teams as camps being to open. Mention of Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze in here as well. ...

Zombie, I think grades are the major screening tool for recruits. Freeze dropped offers last week due to grades, and for injury. But Barber and Middleton look like good additions. 12 spots left. Has potential to be The Universities best recruiting class.

I don't know anything about his attitude, but you have to take talented players and trust that they will respond to your coaching. Obviously, there are cases to avoid, but in trying to rebuild the talent in the program, Hugh Freeze needs to believe he can get players to "buy in" then respond to discipline problems as they arise, as he did with Jamal Mosley.

What do we know about this Barber kid from Georgia? I am scared of us getting such a highly rated player, this early in the rebuild. Dyer was the #1 rated back and brought a bad attitude. We don't need a prima donna like Dyer and I am also concerned that we may be crossing into the gray to get some talent. With Freeze's connections to Kiffin and Orgeron, I just don't want us to do something we will regret later.

On second thought:

Psalm 95:8 KJV

King James Version

Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

I repent!!

"Camp Wilderness," that is a losers aspect, guess that why the Rebel coach and sports media keep mentioning it since they have been in the wilderness for the last sixty years and apparent no way our. They have come to inherit that character. LOSERS! How can a talented athlete want to come to a school with a defeatist attitude as Ole Miss. Sorry but that's the way I see it.That is not the Ole Miss Rebels that I once was an avidly follower and like. They were winners!! They had a Winners attitude and character. Then they inherited "political Correctness" attitude and character and into the wilderness and seasonal losers they went.
