Comments from Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt at his regular Sunday afternoon teleconference. ...
(Did the events of last week cause distractions for the players?)
“None of that was brought up or talked about. We had blinders on. We just went to work. I thought we played really hard. There was a lot of improvement, but I know it doesn't feel good unless the scoreboard is right. We understand that. We came out ready to play, and we competed very hard. I wish we'd have had two or three less calls to see what would have happened. We have to continue to get better, but I saw a team with a lot of spirit out there, and we want to build on that.”
(After reviewing film what did you think of the quarterbacks?)
“Both did some good things when they had time, but they were rushed a bit with pressure. That's kind of been the story for us. Sometimes a receiver hs to get open quicker. Both of them are trying to have a good role. We'll continue to evaluate and keep that going.”
(What did you think of the personnel changes you made, young guys who played more?)
“That was really good, helped us. We have to get those guys on the field, maybe a little more. These freshmen have done an excellent job, guys like Cody Prewitt on special teams. Serderius Bryant has taken a step forward. Aaron Morris did some good things, some things he didn't do so well but for the most part, for the first time, not too bad. Bryon Bennett got in there quite a bit, had three tackles for losses. He's real active. I just see him getting better. We'll continue to call on those guys.”
(What's the status of Enrique Davis moving forward to Fresno?)
"I'm hoping this will be a week where we can get him to full speed and get him some carries."
(On the impact of injuries to Brandon Bolden, Enrique Davis)
“The biggest impact is when the quarterback doesn't have his best friend, the running game. Those two senior hammers just make a difference. Not taking anything away from Jeff Scott, one of our playmakers, tremendous role for him as well, but when you have two guys over 215 pounds that can both run,it sends a message. We've missed that.
Brandon's not himself. Y'all know that. He's not 100 percent. He can't hit the hole and cut like he wants to. It's not the same Brandon. It's very obvious to see, very difficult. He's trying to give us everything he has, but it's difficult when you're not as full speed, especially at tailback.”
