I have refrained from the Mike Leach discussion while Ole Miss had a coach, but now it's time.

Would the former Texas Tech coach be a good fit for Ole Miss? There has been lots of discussion about Leach among Ole Miss fans. He's a proven winner, going 84-43 at Tech. He didn't reach the Big 12 championship game.

With Leach you get his wide open offense, but you also get his eccentricity. Does that matter?

Would Leach be the best choice for the next Ole Miss coach?

No problems Churn. I tried not to sound like a jerk in my reply, but its hard sometimes to tell how people come across on the internet with just written words.

Archaeo: Sorry about that missing word. But I hope the Rebels find a good coach very soon. have a good day.

Churn: You missed the one word in my comment that was important to the discussion. That word was "like". I know that Muschamp isn't going anywhere, but I would like a coach that is 'like' him and the Vandy coach in that they are young and passionate about their teams. Nutt had the fire and passion the first two years but the last two years he just seems to be tired.

Archaeo: what makes you think that Will Muschamp of the Gator would even think about an Ole Miss coaching job??? He is in the process of building a good team down here - Recruiting no problem, but the Noles are out recruiting him. Should he loses to the Noles again this season, of which he probably will, and to Georgia again next season, The Gator could make the rebels a very good deal.

hopeful Ole miss will find them a good coach that fits ole miss role of football. Good luck and good hunting!!!!!

I do think the rebels will get back on the winning road this week-end.

I agree on the Manny Diaz also. Would make it an interesting Egg Bowl.

I would like to see Manny Diaz get the head coaching job at Ole Miss...and hope he would hire Gunter Brewer as his offensive coordinator.

But also don't forget....Kent Austin now has head coaching experience.

bigreb, you do know who our basketball coach is, don't you?

I think the argument that his offense couldn't work in the SEC is a little overstated. Patrino has a top 10 team at Arky against all those tough SEC defenses.

I would rather have a young up-and-comer, like a Smart but I don't think we stand a realistic shot with some of those guys. That said, Leach should definitely be on the list.

I like him but he does not fit in here I am sorry. We witnessed him drunk off his @#$% in the Lobby bar in the Anitol hotel in Dallas two nights before the game with UM.That is his business but it would not go over well here in small town Oxford. Real likable guy and lots of fun to be around but I just think Oxford is not his gig. PS we had a ball with him that night. FYI

I'm obviously very close to the University of Central Florida being that I live in Orlando. I know a lot of people are kind of fed up with George O'Leary and wanting change. I've heard the Mike Leach name being called up as one that "the fans" want. I was discussing this with a friend and I think Mike Leach would be a good fit for a Conference USA or Big East (depending on where they end up). However, I have to vote against Mike Leach when it comes to the SEC, I know some people would call me a homer but I've watched this league since I was old enough to understand the game itself and I can tell you that you can't win in this league without a defense and Mike Leach plays no defense. His defensive coordinator at Texas Tech was Ruffin McNeill who is the head coach at East Carolina University and they consistently have 40 points hung on them every game. Teams like LSU and Alabama have have great defenses and good offenses but it's because when those coaches built those programs, they built the offense and the defense to work off each other in the game plan and play as one team. My point is this, I feel like with Mike Leach he is an offensive guru and he's going to build the offensive the way he wants it and just pawn the defense off, I don't believe you can consistently be a competitor with that style of philosophy.

I don't know anything about Leach other than that his teams ordinarily scored a lot of points - but the Ole Miss defense kept them under control. Are his eccentricities personal or related to football philosophy?

i think leach would bring ole miss back to an average 6-7 wins per season. i think his type of offense would beat most non conference opponents and some of the bottom level sec teams such as vandy and kentucky. but i think it would get stuffed against the alabama's and lsu's. i would be fine with leach, but i think we go after kirby smart.

It would be interesting in any case. I am hoping for a younger coach like Vanderbilts coach or Muschamp from Florida - someone to bring fire and passion in. Thats just me though.

I wouldn't vote for Leach. His teams were entertaining to watch, but as you said, he didn't make it to a championship game. And, there are too many wide open offenses that have been corralled by good SEC defenses. I think he's too far "out there" to be a success in the SEC. Les Miles is just about the limit of being eccentric and being successful in the SEC. I hope we don't go in that direction.
