Reason No. 2: The offensive line

Here's Reason No. 2 that Ole Miss will be improved in 2011.

If Ole Miss is going to have a winning season and get to a bowl game these guys can't miss. They have to be as good as advertised, and the advertising was pretty good. Phil Steele ranked the Ole Miss offensive line No. 2 in the nation – behind SEC rival Alabama – in his position unit rankings.

It's been interesting to watch Bradley Sowell, who just two years ago was drawing criticism for his inability to protect Jevan Snead's blind side. Sowell was a third-year sophomore at the time. Now he's a member of the Outland and Lombardi watch lists and was ranked as the 17th- best player in the SEC this week by Athlon Sports.

The Rebels have experience at both tackle slots with Sowell and junior Bobby Massie. They have an intriguing newcomer at right guard in Matt Hall, a transfer from Arkansas, who brings a tackle's size to the interior, and they return an experienced center in A.J. Hawkins, who earned a spot on the Rimington watch list.

It's a good starting five, and there's experience depth behind them in senior Logan Clair and guards Patrick Junen and Jared Duke. There is young, untested talent in Emmanuel McCray.

When injuries come there are options.

With inexperience at QB and receiver and with a stable of running backs, the Rebels' best chance for sustained success will be a strong running game.

Offensive coordinator David Lee made no bones about it in the spring. He intends to run the football.

For the Rebels to win games the offensive line has to play well.

Ole Miss has at times slipped up on folks

Nutt is also known to win the games that are not suppose to be won, Arkansas always slipped up on some ranked teams, Nutts first year we were not favored and we won, the next we won but nothing like we were suppose to, last year just seemed to happen, we will win some that no one expects, if we just can win the ones we should then it will all be good

GTHLSU, point well taken, but I mentioned in the intro post on Monday that this is intended to be a random order not a ranking of reasons.

As a self-described optimist, jump in with your reasons for improvement. We've got a long way to go.

This should have been your reason #1, as in the most important. Preseason rankings put this line as one of the top in the country. If they end that way, the record will show it, despite expected defensive weaknesses. Hope we can Own time of possession in every game this year! Matt Hall may be reason #2.

As far as can't get any worse, the schedule is harder this year, but I'm an Ole Miss fan = optimist.

If the plan works, the running game will make the passing game look good. Whoever becomes the QB, he won't be asked every play to stand in the pocket and make second and third reads. He'll fake to Bolden and pass to a receiver who is more open than he ought to be.

I had the privilege of being at the first cotton bowl against Texas Tech who had a very explosive offense and was heavily favored to win the game. This was a really good example of how a good ground game can keep the ball out of the hands of the other team. If you can run the ball well and get in the end zone, you have a good shot at winning some games. On the other hand, Ole Miss had a very good defense that year too. It will be interesting to watch this year. I predict our running game will help the quarterbacks to develop as the season goes along and we may surprise some teams later down the schedule with our passing game.
