Getting into the Way Back Machine here.

It was 1990 and I was covering Southern Miss on Saturdays, Meridian High School on Friday nights.

Part of my Meridian responsibility was a game advance every week. Typically, I'd work on that on Wednesday or Thursday, and that involved calling the opposing coach.

It was late in the season, and Meridian was getting ready to travel to Moss Point. I was still fairly new as a Mississippi Resident, a little more than a year into it then, but I had heard many stories about Moss Point coach Billy Miller, now the late Billy Miller.

There were a few consistent themes. One, he was a good coach, and his teams won most of the time. Moss Point had been described to me as a “football factory.” Two, he had a big personality that could shift from fun to angry to mean without notice.

Well, I decided that I was going to call Billy Miller, but I wasn't going to invest a lot of time with it if things started going south. Had other things to do.

Things went south in a hurry. I couldn't get things back on track. I finally said, thank you coach Miller and hung up the phone.

Within five minutes he had tracked down the Meridian Star's phone number and called back to apologize. We had a great interview, and we visited again at the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game in Mobile just prior to his death.

It was in Mobile that I was waiting in a dorm lobby for a couple of Meridian players after practice. Coach Miller walked in, and we talked. A minute later, a player walked in. An offensive lineman from where I do not recall. He was a big fella, seemed to be opposed to conditioning. Miller jumped up, ran to the far wall, then looked at me and said, “Quick, Parrish, get up and go to the other wall. Help me balance the room.”

Na JB that does not ring a bell. Like you I lived in Oxford in my earlier years and have some fond memories. I use to hang out at the Student union some which was a big deal to a young high school kid, The square, the 1/4 mile stretch out to Taylor, the old Skating ring and Mcdonalds on Univ avenue was where I spent most of my days.

We left there at the start of my sophmore year.

Later I met a gal from Mantachie and we moved there in 1989.

PA, as always, thanks for the good work. I think Dos is just pissed and feeling sorry for himself because you didn't share the same feeling he has for his own self-importance. To be honest, meeting him wouldn't be at the top of my list if I were in Fresno!

Looking forward to the season!

JB, what I'm told is that Wordpress has continued to enhance its ease of use for the people writing the block, the people reading it and the people selling ads for it.

Dos, I meant no offense by not walking down to visit with you at Fresno State. There is a lot that goes into getting three stories in the paper from a game that starts at 8:30 or later in the central time zone. I had things to do two hours before.

As far as this particular countdown series, I said at the beginning, and I'll repeat it now, because I understand that everyone doesn't read the blog every day and may not have seen the original post.

I think one of the strengths that I bring to the job is experience. I have been the beat writer for each of the Division I schools in Mississippi at some time. The total is 20 years but only 10 of them at Ole Miss. When I started the series I said the central theme would be football ... not necessarily all Ole Miss football.

I thought stories, some of them off-field, about 20 years of experiences would be of interest. They let you know other people, like Billy Miller, as much as they let you know me.

There are some challenges that go along with the job too. Sometimes it's more than just plugging in a computer.

I appreciate the support of those who feel like offering it and welcome opposing viewpoints.

Mantachie, regarding the security function that requires the two words, we're getting ready for a switch to Wordpress, which I think will make things a lot better for the reader and the admin.

I have been reading the blog for about 4 years now. I like the way it is being done. Any question asked is answered. The personal adds to it.It allows you to feel a part and opens the door to havin a good time and feelng like you can be a part of the rebel news. It is always easy to do someone elses job, but is not easy to do that if we were actually asked to do it.

keep it up Pa--you are the man for OLE MISS news!

the only thing i wished would change is the words you type in to prove you are a person. some times they are blurry and hard to make out. but that is out of PA's hands as to what is used

DosChiChis, i think you also have to take into account that PA seems to write 4 articles to 1 of Lockes. What this does is gives us as readers a chance to see what is going on with ole miss as well as some more personal aspects of PA's life. I dont think there is anything wrong with that.

Only thing I can say is, what the heck does any of this have to do with Ole Miss? We have heard more stories on here about Aunt Lulu in Louisiana, your inability to walk, and the facilities at your old college than we have Ole Miss. I look at Brad's Blog and he has something interesting almost everyday and its always about MSU. I mean I like you and all, but I could care less how your Aunt Lulu is or where she gets her hair cut. We have heard very little about recruiting. Never any hard questions that might fire up a news worthy response. I take the DJ at my farm back in Ms. The folks read it and mail it out to me each week. I'm just telling you guys it's getting pretty dull. And, I absolutely mean no offense, but I'm not going to sit here and kiss up and tell you that you are the greatest ever. I think you have been disinterested for the last couple of years for whatever reason. Maybe its time for a change in assignments. I'd like to see Brad cover the Rebels for a season and just see if the changes spur more interest. Seems you are struggling for topics to write about.

Also, I think you could have walked out and spoken to a reader that has been following you for several years when you were in Fresno. You aren't that important or busy two hours before a game begins. How long does it take to plug in a computer?

Sometimes we all need a lesson in humility.

I believe what you are looking for is the watered-down, sugarcoated school website version. Believe me, it's there!

Integrity and loyalty, Sir, that's what I don't see in any of you in the sports or news media, so, you are just out to make a buck and print a story. Shame on you!!!

Oh how, Mr. Alford's account of an interview going south sounds familiar. I covered high school sports for another newspaper in another city. Yes, turfguy is right - countless numbers of people (players, coaches, fans, etc.) you get to meet - is so rewarding. But it's never smooth sailing. There's always someone who doesn't see eye to eye and from that point, everything else a writer does is not good enough. I'm sure Mr. Locke would agree as well. What a writer must do is remain humble and true. Even though, hired to a specific beat, a writer MUST report the good AND the bad. If it's bad news or not to that person's liking, you'll hear promises of canceling their subscription or in the future never to read anymore. So my hats off to the writers. Despite what sometimes they may have to put up with, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Thanks Turf Guy. I still consider my job to have more pluses than minuses. When the scales tilt maybe I can drive a cab.

It was a beautiful sunrise this morning. A bright orange blaze rising above the San Gabriel Mountains, with a hot cup of joe and some bacon and grits. Can't get grits out here, made them myself.

You are fortunate to have your job, Alford. I know it can get you down, but the people, coaches and players you get to meet. I am envious. I wanted to be a sports journalist, but was called to do something else. You are very good at what you do.
