Getting into the Way Back Machine here.
It was 1990 and I was covering Southern Miss on Saturdays, Meridian High School on Friday nights.
Part of my Meridian responsibility was a game advance every week. Typically, I'd work on that on Wednesday or Thursday, and that involved calling the opposing coach.
It was late in the season, and Meridian was getting ready to travel to Moss Point. I was still fairly new as a Mississippi Resident, a little more than a year into it then, but I had heard many stories about Moss Point coach Billy Miller, now the late Billy Miller.
There were a few consistent themes. One, he was a good coach, and his teams won most of the time. Moss Point had been described to me as a “football factory.” Two, he had a big personality that could shift from fun to angry to mean without notice.
Well, I decided that I was going to call Billy Miller, but I wasn't going to invest a lot of time with it if things started going south. Had other things to do.
Things went south in a hurry. I couldn't get things back on track. I finally said, thank you coach Miller and hung up the phone.
Within five minutes he had tracked down the Meridian Star's phone number and called back to apologize. We had a great interview, and we visited again at the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game in Mobile just prior to his death.
It was in Mobile that I was waiting in a dorm lobby for a couple of Meridian players after practice. Coach Miller walked in, and we talked. A minute later, a player walked in. An offensive lineman from where I do not recall. He was a big fella, seemed to be opposed to conditioning. Miller jumped up, ran to the far wall, then looked at me and said, “Quick, Parrish, get up and go to the other wall. Help me balance the room.”
We left there at the start of my sophmore year.
Later I met a gal from Mantachie and we moved there in 1989.
Looking forward to the season!
Keep up the good work, i check 3-4 times a day to see if anything new is on and if their are updates.

good to see your comments back on
was actually missing your comments while you were gone
Back to the Farley, Big Draws, Ima ,Bornarebel, Ripley Rebel and all the gang once again. Sounds good, PA why the switchback, if you don't mind me asking.
JB.
As far as this particular countdown series, I said at the beginning, and I'll repeat it now, because I understand that everyone doesn't read the blog every day and may not have seen the original post.
I think one of the strengths that I bring to the job is experience. I have been the beat writer for each of the Division I schools in Mississippi at some time. The total is 20 years but only 10 of them at Ole Miss. When I started the series I said the central theme would be football ... not necessarily all Ole Miss football.
I thought stories, some of them off-field, about 20 years of experiences would be of interest. They let you know other people, like Billy Miller, as much as they let you know me.
There are some challenges that go along with the job too. Sometimes it's more than just plugging in a computer.
I appreciate the support of those who feel like offering it and welcome opposing viewpoints.
Mantachie, regarding the security function that requires the two words, we're getting ready for a switch to Wordpress, which I think will make things a lot better for the reader and the admin.
keep it up Pa--you are the man for OLE MISS news!
the only thing i wished would change is the words you type in to prove you are a person. some times they are blurry and hard to make out. but that is out of PA's hands as to what is used
Also, I think you could have walked out and spoken to a reader that has been following you for several years when you were in Fresno. You aren't that important or busy two hours before a game begins. How long does it take to plug in a computer?
Sometimes we all need a lesson in humility.

You are fortunate to have your job, Alford. I know it can get you down, but the people, coaches and players you get to meet. I am envious. I wanted to be a sports journalist, but was called to do something else. You are very good at what you do.
