Some highlights from the conference call with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. ...
One major injury that went undetected last night was to starting right guard Logan Clair, who sustained a broken ankle, a chipped bone, Nutt said. Clair is expected to miss 4-5 weeks. He is the third starter at that position this season and had brought a measure of stability.
Nutt mentioned Emmanuel McCray and Jared Duke as possible replacements, but he's reluctant to take away from his depth at tackle.
Starting center A.J. Hawkins, who missed last night's game as he continues to recover from a stinger, is another possibility Nutt said. That indicates that Nutt was pleased with the play of freshman Evan Swindall at center last night and that Hawkins, who did dress out last night, is ready to return. ...
Lots of talk about officiating, but as is custom with football through the ages, little to be done about it once the scoreboard clock hits zero.
Nutt said he thought the off-side call on the on-side kick, which Ole Miss recovered, surprised the official. He said Fon Ingram was not off-side in his opinion but that he was lined up too close to the line making it easier for the official to make the call.
On the roughing the kicker call that led to a touchdown instead of a field goal, Nutt said he never received an explanation from the official and suggested that he – that Nutt – needs to review the rule for clarification. “I don't know if that matters. I'm checking into it today,” Nutt said.
Several plays will be submitted to the conference office for review. “We submit, but it doesn't do any good. It doesn't change the game or anything,” he said. …
In other news Nutt called the defensive effort the team's best this season. The general theme of the call was missed opportunities. Nutt said he felt like the Rebels left “17-20” points on the table. “The reason South Carolina won is because they made those plays,” Nutt said.
I agree, to beat a top 10 team, you "steal" points from the other team, not leave them on the table for them to secure.
