What Scott missed this month

Jeff Scott has two years of experience, but that doesn't mean his practice time lost because of injury this month is inconsequential.

Scott has taken the "mental reps" as they say, but how much he plays in Saturday's opener against Central Arkansas will be determined by how he handles practice this week, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said.

The bottom line is Scott is on page with the offense, but has missed the contact, and re-learning the contact is a big deal for a running back.

Says RB coach Derrick Nix: "The biggest thing is getting hit, going through full scrimmages. That's a necessity for a running back. You have to go in and get acclimated to getting hit by guys a lot of times. That's one of the easiest ways to go out and fumble the ball, if you're not used to the contact. That's the biggest thing. I think mentally he's going to be there. He realizes what we're trying to do with the offense, but at running back you've got to get hit, get a feel for running into linebackers on the blitz or getting ready to hit guys that are coming unblocked with ball-security."

Had Scott been healthy they entire month he'd have had a challenge on his hands with Randall Mackey's move to the backfield. As it stands, the depth chart reads Mackey "or" Scott as the starter. Freeze made liberal use of the word "or" sprinkling it 10 times through the first regular season depth chart.

If Scott is healthy, he'll be a big part of things, and it will be interesting to see he and Mackey on the field at the same time.

Interesting, too, will be how all the backs are used with freshmen I'Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton then veterans Devin Thomas and Nick Parker lining up behind Mackey and Scott. Nix says all six backs will have "different roles."

Ole miss has always had the winning edge over Gators in Football.. Gators have won some games but the Rebels have won the most, even in the swamp. JB

I agree Firefighter, before last year, Ole Miss always played hard whether they were out-manned or not - remember the game against Tebow and the Gators in the swamp? I try to forget that game. Nevertheless, if you have your team playing hard and the better team lets you hang around, then you always have a chance for a victory. That's all a coach can ask for is to be in position in the 4th quarter to win, or steal a game.

One thing I like about Freeze's system is that it is all about playing with heart and determination. If the team buys into what Freeze preaches then they should win the games they are suppose to win, keep the games they are suppose to lose somewhat exciting, and finally ever now and then take one those games where they are the underdog.

It is no secret that Ole Miss is on paper one of the worst teams in the league. I dont think many Ole Miss fans will argue that. However, if Ole Miss comes out every Saturday and plays the entire game as a team and full of emotion they will surprise many a fans across the SEC. Will their record reflect that effort....probably not this year, but if a precedent can be set this year and build upon that...well only up from here.

For M-State fans... State does look better on paper and should go back to a bowl again this year (good for them). However as a wise man once said don't count your chickens until they hatch!

"or" is a bad word to hear from a player's perspective. Like, am I starting OR is he starting? Are we out of the wilderness OR are we still in it? Too little confindence OR too many cliches?

No bout a doubt it, The blackbears from Oxford will lose to the Central Arkansas Bears. 13 to 10
