Heading to Oxford soon for Day 2 of camp. ...

Covering the Rebels' first August practice of the Hugh Freeze Era I was reminded of a couple of things yesterday.

One, it's pretty hot out there. Two, I'm watching football and taking mental reps, so to speak, so it's not like working construction on a deadline.

That being said, I wondered how I was going to handle the stadium steps at Southern Miss in 1991. Following the wreck that June I spent most of the summer in a wheelchair and at the beginning of August was still getting around on a walker.

The wreck was June 15, 1991. I mark the date every year not with fanfare but just by the recognition that God has been so good to my family and me since that day more than 21 years ago. I could have died then, but He fully healed me. This particular summer we drove down to Destin for vacation, a trip that always brings memories for my wife Laurie and me as the route takes us through the scene of the wreck on US 45 South just north of Citronelle, Ala.

That summer was a series of small victories through the rehab process made possible by the goodness of people around me.

I remember Southern Miss football coach Curley Hallman and basketball coach M.K. Turk calling my hospital room in Mobile to check on me, sports writers Robert Wilson, then of the Clarion-Ledger, and John Bialas of The Sun Herald driving over to visit.

We didn't cover camp then the way we do now, which turned out to be a good thing. When media day came a younger co-worker, Rocky Higginbotham, drove me to Hattiesburg, and I was able to get around and do what I needed to do. The walker was in the trunk if needed. The knees were stiff, the process slow, but it got better from there.

I'll be able to get around the practice fields this morning and won't need a walker.

Practice is at 9:45. Notes on the blog later.

PA that hwy 45 S from Alabama line to Mobile is a deadly strip of road, WE have traveled it many times since 1974 after I retired from the Air Force on our way to Gods country Lafayette Co. Mississippi. Many crosses have been placed on that strip of road, so count yourself Blessed a "Marvelous' man. old hwy 45 from Okalona was very bad at one time, but now like a super Hwy in Mississippi.

Lay your hands on the Rebels and MR freeze in Prayer for a successful and a safe season. Wishing all a great day.

PA you are a Blessed and marvelous man, keep up the good work. one of my favorite is: Psalm 91.1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust . 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust : his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet . 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high , because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

wow, sounds like you had a truly bad auto accident. it also says that you are a hard worker if you are reporting while rehabing on a walker. so the next time someone says to you, "it sure is hot out here", you can smile to yourself knowing it could be alot worse.
