Coaching searches can be both exhuasting and wildly entertaining at the same time.

The two best "scenarios" I heard during the Ole Miss search that ended with the hiring of Hugh Freeze Sunday were these: Phil Fulmer and Jimmy Johnson.

I heard Fulmer early in the search. It was presented not as "This is going to happen" but as "This should happen and would be good for Ole Miss." The idea was not Fulmer alone, but with the guarantee that he would be joined by LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis. The two were highly successful together when Fulmer was head coach at Tennessee.

Fulmer, of course, did not fit the age and energy description that seems to be popular among coaching candidates these days. Not that he can't coach, but he's very different from Freeze in those categories.

Chavis, by the way, just won the Broyles Award which goes to the nation's top assistant coach.

Jimmy Johnson came to me much later in the search. It's not clear if Howie, Terry and JB would come along from the set at Fox studios and join up as assistants.

The theory said that Johnson was helping a friend's son, a junior college offensive lineman, find a place to play, that place being Ole Miss. Through the conversations Johnson became interested in the job. Supposedly there's an itch to coach and a desire to prove himself against the upper echelon coaches in the SEC.

I can believe the part about Ole Miss needing a junior college offensive lineman.

Whenever a coach search occurs at Ole Miss it seems like Kent Austin's name comes up. He was popular as an Ole Miss quarterback, successful as a CFL player and a CFL coach, winning the championship with Saskatchewan. He was successful for two years as Ole Miss offensive coordinator, though his hands were tied to a degree as Houston Nutt was more involved with the offense at that time.

Austin has been less successful as head coach at Cornell (7-13 in 2 years, 5-5 this year) but is now being courted for a possible return to Saskatchewan.

I am reminded that once upon a time during one Ole Miss coaching search former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes was believed, by some, to be a candidate. That was before my time, but that's a story that's been handed down.

Bi Reb,

As the late great singer/songwriter Jim Croce wrote in one of his timeless classics, I got a name, I got a name.

It's not digging up dirt on Freeze. It's showing how bad the Otown Clan has become and it's funny. In these days of recessions and false depressions and all the sad news of the day, it does a fellow good to get a chuckle or two by picking fleas off a bear's back. If people are picking on the past of a few coaches, well the University of Oxfart should had tried harder to get a better coach. I am sure he is a nice guy, but that won't help him escape the clutches of The Rebelbear Killer, Dan Mullen. Dan has a space on the wall cleared for another wall mount. Amen!

This sounds like what Al Sharpton on that radical MSNBC cable network, would say about Obama as pres, days of non recessions, false depressions, bringing down unemployment, America is lazy, Israel is a Terrorist nation, and on and on.

I must agree this IS ENTERTAINMENT AND AMUSEMENT. The Ole Miss search has become like a house of Circus CLOWNS. Now that they have gotten, in my opinion, a truly righteous and devoted Christian believer, some just want let up. The critical wheel just keep turning. Perhaps Ole Miss should have re-hired Orgeron and run up another several years as losers, the worse loosing coach in Ole Miss history.

My bet and hope is that Coach freeze will be successful in turning around this loosing character of Ole Miss Rebels. making winners of them. That will be a major job after three (3)losing years of Orgeron and last two losing(2) years of Nutt.

Well the actual search was conducted orderly and with confidentuality . But Fans and idiots from other schools and the media was putting every rumor or thought on the boards and it got out of hand. The committee gets all this put on them and it nowhere near happened like that. This is the world of the internet and instant and constant crap being spewed. These guys on here that dont have a clue what the new DEf line coach has been thru or even if the dirt brought up was him or if he got convicted and here they go putting this crap all over the internet. Freeze is a strong christian and this may be a story of him leading this guy to a new life with Christ and him doing the right thing and trying to move on but yet here are these guys spewing it all back up. Just saying and venting. It makes me sick that they would attack him and they dont even know him and they are so juvenile and irresponcible.I am sure if it is him he has fought to prove himself everyday and they tear that all down in a matter of hoursjust to try and poke fun at Ole Miss and get kicks.
