Notes and observations from the latest SEC loss for Ole Miss, this one 30-13 at Kentucky. ...

As I write this morning, somewhere on I-65 south of Elizabethtown, there's no confirmation that Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt has been fired.

Twitter was alive with that talk late Saturday night after the Rebels' come-from-ahead loss to Kentucky.

Nutt addressed his job status following the game, only to say it was out of his hands. “It's not my decision,” he said.

Speculation regarding Nutt's future has been rampant and hit a fever pitch when the Rebels lost by 17 points in a game that basically would determine the worst team in the SEC. There's no trophy for that, and such a designation is strictly perception. But on Nov. 5, 2011, that was the perception for many folks.

Against a vulnerable opponent with a true freshman quarterback making his first start, the Rebels gave up 398 total yards.

Maxwell Smith completed 19-of-36 attempts for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception.

Kentucky, as most teams do, also ran the ball against Ole Miss. The Wildcats did not become the seventh team to surpass 200 rushing yards, but 5-foot-9, 178-pound junior

CoShik Williams, who had just 274 rushing yards going into the game, no more than 64 against an SEC opponent, had 111 and two touchdowns on 25 carries.

Again porous on defense, the Rebels were inconsistent on offense.

Two strong drives to start the game produced field goals instead of touchdowns. The non-catch by Ja-Mes Logan on the first drive was a bad sign.

His slant route in the end zone wasn't a drop. It would have been a good catch, but it's a catch that good players make, one that Logan has made before. But not yesterday.

Seems odd they targeted Logan on the play anyway, since he's been de-emphasized among the receivers.

They didn't target him the second time. From 3 yards out, Donte Moncrief caught a fade in the end zone, but was called for pushing off, and the touchdown was negated.

Those two drives were all the Rebels could muster in the first half. Their next four possessions included three three-and-outs and an interception.

They drove 72 yards in 12 plays to score on Randall Mackey's 21-yard pass to Nick Brassell to take a 13-10 lead in the third quarter.

After three weeks of getting outscored 61-0 in the third, it was a nice change of pace, but it didn't last.

Kentucky had been getting receivers open downfield, and Smith was finally able to connect with those guys late in the game.

From the press box we discussed why Kentucky didn't just keeping handing it to Williams.

They were having success in the run game. It was how it moved most of 80 yards for its first touchdown and a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter.

UK coach Joker Phillips didn't stay committed to the run, though. Maybe he saw what we saw, and that was Kentucky receivers getting open. They were close in the passing game, and that's Smith's strength. Finally he connected for 38 yards as La'Rod King beat Nick Brassell for a score, and later for 55 yards as King got behind Wesley Pendleton.

Defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix didn't think coverage was a game-long issue.

“They didn't have a lot of success with deep balls till the end of the game. Throughout the game we played the deep ball well,” he said. “The latter part of the game we gave up a couple. Ideally you'd like to be in position to make the play on every ball that's thrown, but that's a part of football. Sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you don't.”

Breaks Ole Miss might have gotten on a potential go-ahead scoring drive late in the fourth didn't go the Rebels' way, because they self-destructed with 25 yards in penalties, two holding calls and a false start. Ultimately the Rebels punted from near mid-field.

It was the last good chance for them to pull out a win. Though Kentucky was back at its 15, the Wildcats seized opportunity with an 85-yard drive highlighted by King's 55-yard catch. It was Kentucky's second 80-plus yard drive of the fourth quarter.

The Ole Miss SEC losing streak is now at 12 games. It won't be extended this week, regardless of who coaches the Rebels, because it's a non-conference game, homecoming, against La. Tech, which by the way, defeated Fresno State 41-21 at Fresno last night.

Following the Nutt story today and will post more when I know more.

Lake, I'm not able to speak for everyone else but your observations are, in my opinion, spot on. Mascots, songs, flags, cow bells - that's all fluff stuff! The coaches revolving door certainly has not worked! There is little difference in coacing abilities at this level. However, the guy with the biggest, fastest, strongest X's & 0's usually wins.

Dos: "No one cares what you think."

Yet, he responded. What a joke!

I'm not going to stay on here and go back-and-forth w/ your ignore a$$, Dos. Everybody knows you randomly make up stuff. The fact that you're now covering up an inaccurate statement w/ more inaccurate statements proves that.

Oh, BWT, are you actually using a club hockey game to talk smack?! That's precious. Have a good night, Nancy.

Lake dweller or whatever your name is.. everyone has an opinion but thing about it I believe yours is out numbered by everyone else. All these things like the mascot change and stuff does affect the players to an extent. IF the fans aren't in the stands and into the game it reflects on the players attitude. You are right about ad and athletic president doesn't call plays but they hire sorry coaches like Orgeron that waste four years and puts the program way behind. So yeah it does start at the top of the food chain.

Help me here? An A.D. nor a President calls plays, recruits, or runs practices. That would be the coach and his staff. You say they took away your mascot and song. I have never seen LSU blame a loss on the tiger not being his cage in a game or a Alabama player getting mad because they forgot to play "Sweet Home Alabama". They are just good players that are well coached. Blaming it on a song, president, AD, or mascot is just a poor excuse. I want the Mississippi schools to do well, but recruit and have them well coached. Cleaning house every few years does not seem to be working.

Boone and Jones need to go for sure, but they have nothing to do with Nutt's inability to coach. The continuation of second half self meltdowns have everything to do with poor coaching. Everything must go, but that is a huge amount of money to do it. Nutt may get another year alog with Boone and Jones. If that is the case, it will set Rebel football back 7 years. 7 years of losing or average football at best. What a mess. Recruits are watching, O town ranks 51st in recruiting right now.

I think the players respect Coach Nutt. Too bad that can't be said for Jones and Boone. Just another reason those two need to go. It just doesn't make sense to pay Coach Nutt to leave when we'd be better off to pay off Boone and give Nutt one more year to produce. I think Nutt might work with us under a different and competent AD. Fire Jones and Boone first. I can't think of a good coach who would work under Boone.

@dawg I'm repeating what is being said as I stated, but I'm sure your level of understanding is watered down. Go lick yourself. You are just dwelling on our site because State is no better. Half the basketball team either left or was dismissed. Yall got stomped by OM in hockey. The only thing Mullet has shown is he knows how to install clocks and loves to fly around in crop dusting helicopters. No one cares what you think. Troll.

You're saying contradictory things, Dos, which goes to show that your 'insider' information is never accurate.

Tough loss, Rebs. I thought that would be a win.

From what I can find out....the players were notified in a meeting this morning. One player said it made him, "sick to his stomach." Nutt not to be retained. Decision on whether he will coach rest of year tomorrow. Again, all this is rumor, but it is coming from within.

After reading these comments it seems unanimous that the problems at Ole Miss do not lie with Coach Nutt but are the blunders of our incompetent AD, Pete Boone. Boone made a statement once that he would step down if it was better for the school. Well Mr. Boone I think it's time for YOU to start stepping. I hope to see YOUR resignation by this afternoon. Jones might need to get his resignation ready too because after what all he has done the support will be minimal and he will be watched like a hawk. I'll bet he won't try to drop our REBEL name now. That was next on his list.

colonelreb4ever; You are exactly right. Firing Nutt and the coaching staff only fixes part of the problem. This whole controversy started with the "political correct" personal views of Jones and Boone. They should be the first to go. If Nutt is fired and those two stay the University will be no better off. They must get rid of the entire leadership and bring those traditions back. I am still boggled as to how they stepped in and took it all away. I love Ole Miss and we have a great future ONLY if Jones and Boone are escorted off campus and out of Oxford.

I understand Nutt was asked to resign and refused. Boone may have some problems there, because Nutt has been verbally promised, in public, that Boone will automaticly renew his contract to 4 years with raises each year. A verbal contract in Ms is as good as paper. I understand Boone, Nutt, and Jones were trying to fire some assistant to keep the Red and Blue nation from burning the house down because the money is not there for a head coaching and a.d. change. We are talking 10-15 million dollars. 6 million to buy out Nutt, 2 million on Nix, 2 million for rest of staff, 1 million in legal fees, 4 million to buy out a head coach to come to Ole Miss.....my Math may not be correct but it sounds as if OM is really over the barrell on these contracts. Maybe we should try to hire someone that actually knows how to write a contract next time. I say have a performance based contract. I know you can't pay for wins, but you can set benchmarks. I just don't see it happening anytime soon. Boone and Jones couldn't find their way out of a paper sack.

Well I am absolutely sure that our rebels are one of the worst teams in country! I never thought I would see such horrible teams like this again after Orgeron but I think these last two years are just as bad or worse. I don't know who is the one in charge to fire Dan Jones but the heads should roll starting with his and Pete Boone now! I think tin whole coaching staff should get their walking papers as soon as the clock at egg bowl hits all zeros. It's just slam sickening to watch this team play! LOve my rebels but they won't win another game this year and don't know how they won the two they did. Ole Miss is a complete mockery of college football and all the side news we have made with losing all our traditions such as our beloved colonel reb and song. All this political correctness is gonna keep em on the losing and laughing stock side until we get some leaders and coaches that care.

If Coach Nutt is leaving the Rebels, then,SO AM I. . No one can make be believe that Coach Nutt is behind the down fall of Ole Miss football. Their football started on a down hill glide at the departure of Johnny Vaught about forty years ago. It's got to be problems somewhere else within that Ole miss AD. coach nutt had nothing to do with the failed men's basketball and last season Baseball.

My heart and feeling go out to the REBEL NATION many with family ties over the past fifty years.

Will be back from time to time reading the mail!!

Etown! Many good memories there... good chinese food, the dude serving us had 4 thumbs. I was stationed at Fort Knox..anyway I think Nutt could have done a better job with a better AD. Who will be next? Until we get a new AD, the results will be the same, even if we had Nick Saban. I say lets get Archie as AD and Peyton for head coach, if he retires from the Colts of course. Anyway PA drive safely.
