A few notes and observactons from Ole Miss 23-10 loss to No. 8 Alabama ...

The end result isn't surprising but how the Rebels got their was different than I expected. Even though the Rebels were facing the best defense they've seen so far, I thought they'd have a little more success on offense.

Offense has been what they've done well this year, not defense. Saturday night, almost Sunday morning, that flip-flopped.

Defense gave the Rebels a fighting chance in the game, offense did not.

The Rebels weren't going to line up and control the ball in the run game against the Alabama defense. Obviously Houston Nutt believed this as well, since Ole Miss had just 26 rush attempts, far fewer than the 46.2 attempts it averages.

Having freshman Evan Swindall make his first start at center didn't help this cause. Swindall got tossed around a bit but generally held his own. There were no issues with the shotgun snap, something the Rebels used almost exclusively.

Nutt fully intended to use his receivers more, pretty much abandoning the fullback for the entire game. I can remember one play with a fullback, and Brandon Bolden lined up in the spot then.

Early on field position limited some things Nutt could do with play-calling, but you have to be good enough to change field posiiton, to drive for a few first downs before punting. Ole Miss couldn't do that and played the first half almost exclusively in its own end of the field.

Tyler Campbell had his best game of the year punting, with a 47.8-yard average finally showing of the leg in games that he does so often in practice. But his punting mates had their worst game in coverage, as Bama's Marquis Maze averaged 20.8 yards per return. Alabama's worst starting field position on its first five drives was its own 35, and three of those drives started at either the 50 or in Ole Miss territory, one of them at the Rebels' 8 after a Maze return of 37 yards. The Tide scored 13 of its 23 points during that time.

Under the circumstances the Ole Miss defense played exceptionally well.

By the Rebels' third possession Nutt just starting flinging it regardless of field postion. There were a few drops by receivers, a few off-target passes by Jeremiah Masoli who at times let the pass rush get in his head. He was under pressure on most plays.

There were some nice grabs by receivers, one of them from Melvin Harris on the 15-yard touchdown catch. Harris was covered closely on the play and carried the Alabama defender the last yard over the goalline. For the most part though, Ole Miss was unable to exploit the Alabama secondary the way South Carolina did.

You expect some drop in offensive production going from Fresno State and Kentucky defenses to Alabama, but you shouldn't go from 55 and 42 points to 10. There's a middle ground in there somewhere, and the Rebels have to find it if they're going to compete.

Defensively, pass coverage was better. While there was once talk of the pass rush helping out the coverage, that worked the other way around. Ole Miss had four sacks and at times it was becuase Bama quarterback Greg McElroy couldn't find anywhere to throw the ball. He doesn't throw picks, but McElroy will hold the ball and give up a sack. He did it against South Carolina seven times.

There were times when McElroy just missed a receiver or had a pass dropped, but you get that when the defense takes a passing game out of sync with coverage and pressure.

The move of LaMark Armour to defensive end worked well. Armour was also at tackle in pass-rush situations and finished with six tackles and half a sack. I suspect that move will last.

The Rebels were averaging just 36.2 yards in penalties but gave up 106 on 12 flags. They were called for five personal fouls. The first was roughing the kicker against Jeremy McGee on Alabama's opening possession. It was a blown call as replays showed McGee being pushed into the kicker.

Defensively, the blown call resulted in an extra four points for the Tide, which took a made field goal off the board to keep the drive alive, scoring with a 7-yard pass from McElroy to Preston Dial.

Alabama's only other touchdown was a good play call against a stunting Ole Miss defense. End DT Shackelford left his spot on a stunt, and that's where Bama's play went, a screen pass to Trent Richardson that went 82 yards for a score. Ole Miss was close to holding the Alabama offense to the 13-15 point range, which is great imrpovement for a unit that was giving up 32.6 points a game.

Nutt was livid about the off-sides call on the on-sides kick, which the Rebels recovered. He said the play was "perfect" and that he was lined up on the 30 and saw no one off-sides.

Moving forward, the Rebels won't be playing an Alabama-type defense in the next two weeks. They need to regain their offensive step, and if the defensive production becomes the norm and not an isolated incident, they'll be in position to win some games in the second half of the season.

Hello JB,

I was up early after hitting the sack early last night. I didn't actually see the game but from the sounds of it the Ref's missed every call :) One thing is for sure, you are going to get a little home cooking on the road. Every home team does. It's just something you get used to on the road. Oh by the way it was an exciting weekend. Finally got to feel what you guys felt a year or so ago. A win in the swamp.

Just as I thought. The reb blog is good for a laugh after a loss. Funny how they see things in those red and blue glasses.

PA - did you notice that the official that flagged OM for the offsides on the onside kick actually dropped the flag at the point where the Rebels recovered the ball? Could he have intended to call an illegal touch until he realized that the ball HAD actually traveled 10 yards, then, instead of admitting his mistake, changed his call to offsides to cover his rear?

M4 (this morning in Northport) A famous town of mine during my youthful years as an avid major league baseball fan while growing up in Tula,Miss. Northport produced some very good baseball players in those days. Me and family have made many, many trips thru Northport on our travels from Oxford area to Florida. As we travelled thru, it always brought back past memories to me of those pro baseball players of Northport.

We spent a night there once on one of those travels and the people we met were very friendly and nice to us.

In those days Ole Miss was a great national rated football team, but they never played The Tide, for some reason or another.

I wish that they could and believe the win-loss record would be much different than it stands today.

Sorry to take up your time just a thought from the past, Jimmy

It doesn't help our cause that we challenged the NCAA and won the Holy Masoli epidsode. Who's laughing now??? Here's what I hear has happened:

President of NCAA in phone call to Commish of SEC: "Yeah, you guys gotta real problem down there in Oxford."

"Mississippi? I don't follow?"

"Yeah, they fought the law and the law didn't win, at least that's what they think, you follow?"

"Not really, but anyway, we really need 2 teams in the BCS this year to get that extra $20M."

"That's exactly what we're discussing here, that problem in Oxford. You make sure they don't cause any of your good teams tripping up by them, and we'll handle the rest."

"I got it....since you guys didn't hamstring them at quarterback this year, you got any ideas, you know that aren't blatant?"

"Don't you hire your own referees? And aren't they always kind of picking on them anyway, for that Rebel thing?"

"I reckon, but they are really trying to do some good things down there. And seriously, how long can we make them pay for sins of their ancestors?"

"Well, I suppose we can go back and talk to the PAC-10 and let them know they need to ensure Arizona can pick up the slack since that Reggie Bush thing completely went public on us without us controlling that. We screwed the pooch on that deal."

"Well....wait just a second. I don't like it, but I'll see if there is a crew or two, especially in their "nationally ranked" opponents that they are 20 plus point underdogs anyway, that can help ensure they don't cause a stumble. I mean, their fanbase already thinks they are going to lose those anyway, and the kids, well, they'll find a way to forgive us when they are either working in the Athletic Department or at a Chevron in a few years."

"Then it's settled."

"Well, like I sa..."

"Good. See you in Phoenix AND New Orleans."

"Ok. Good to ta..."

Click.

That was kinda fun. Soothing even.....

Yeah, I thought the officials mde some bad calls. We knew that was going to happen. I think, too, that there was some pent up player(dislike? get-even?) emotions from the past few years' Alabama games which caused some of the guys to be a bit out of control - especially inthe first half.

But, what do I know?

Thanks for the info, Reason2Succeed. I didn't know that!! I do think the Rebs got the short end of the ref's speculations.

Now, now, you knew the SEC couldn't just let you beat their National Championship contender did you? When you lost to Jaxville State you doomed your whole season because every game that you win hurts every teams strength of schedule because YOU LOST TO JACKSONVILLE STATE!!! So, you don't have to get over it, but get used to it because the refs are going to be watching.

To avoid embarrassment of them in the future, we limit the pictures of them in Ole Miss clothing. Just kidding!!! We don't post them on the Interent since there are SEC referee's that have internet access. We are afraid that they will see them in Ole Miss clothes and make attempts to rape and pillage them at ever opportunity. They've been doing it to 18-23 year-old grown men for the last century in this series, and I just don't want to spend the remainder of my life on this earth contemplating revenge on these fruit-loops in a manner that is portraied in the movie "Law Abiding Citizen." Sorry PA, you'll have to meet up with us to get a glimpse of them in person.

Deeply Concerned,

If i would've been at the game last night i most likely would've went to jail after assaulting a few refs. That was some of the worst officiating I've ever seen, I knew i would see some bad calls but come on. The 4 point difference after the bama guy tossed our guy into the kicker and the the hands to the face when they saw Trent Richardson get demoralized on the kickoff return and fumble and we recovered which took away at least 3 from us which would make up a difference of 7 points now and then every time we got something going on offense which wasn't a lot because of dropped passes from Markeith, Breaux, and one from Melvin H. they stuck us with some of the lamest calls ever to take our confidence away, just suck the life out of us. Our defense played great on every down but one when they let Richardson loose on the long screen pass. Offense couldn't get anything going in the first half because of field positioning but neither could Bama. It makes me so mad that our guys go out there and give it their all and have it taken away from them by a bunch of over paid fat a$$es, like the poster below stated, we've gotten the shaft in this series stretching way back, most notably was 07 and then again this year but I hate Bama, I hate them as much as i do LSU and we will make it to a bowl game this year, we will take have our chance to take down 3 ranked teams this year and after last night if the refs can keep their noses out of it i honestly believe that we can win out. No one can stop us but ourselves and or the refs of the sec, they are complete trash to this conference. Hotty Toddy...

I thought that a bad call was made in first qtr on the FG where and Ole Miss player was blocked into the kicker by a Bama player. 15 yrd penality and resulting in the first TD rather than the FG. Maybe Iam wrong, but I don't see that it was a foulon the Rebel player..

Bama defense did put the damper on that Ole Miss offense.

It goes back to the beginning of this series. PA, you'll have to excuse me for quoting another Media outlet, but the The Tuscaloosa News says it best....STAT OF THE GAME: "in the first half, Ole Miss had more penalty yards than offensive yards." And when the yardage on the pentalities weren't racking up, the points in which the flags were thrown made THE difference. I know Staters and Bamers will say we are complaining "as usual" but it's impossible to play 17 on 11 as we have had to do time and time again in this series. I just hate it for the kids. They put their heart and soul on the line all week preparing to play a football game. And to have a group of 35-55 year old has-beens who are supposed to see things in black and white and no bias, is pathetic. The only surprise to me was it wasn't Penn Waggers' crew.

Granted, we dropped perfect passes and a pick 6, as we do game after game, year after year, but when there are more "players" playing for the other side, that just plain sucks. 17 on 11 just ain't right.

I sure am proud of the way this team competed, regardless of the outcome. The defense is finally showing the promise that was touted in the preseason. We put our kids in Ole Miss Rebel suits to go to Church this morning in Northport, and I wore a red and blue shirt....I was not embarrassed or ashamed of our effort. Hotty Toddy! Go get those Razorbacks.

How about that officiating? The offside call on the onside kick was thrown after we were on the ball. And why the discussion about an offsides penalty? Then we kick off and Richardson fumbles, they throw another mistery flag, this time hands to the face. Did anybody see hands to the face?

I'm not saying we would have won the game, but a fair shake isn't much to ask.
