I spoke with Hugh Freeze a minute ago for an update on football academics now that the spring semester has ended.

The immediate need for his players with grades concerns in the spring semester was to get to 18 hours passed.

Freeze said when he took over he had 25 players with some sort of issue, many of them concerning the need to get to 18 hours.

Reaching this point doesn't make them eligible, but without reaching the hours minimum – and thereby continuing on with classes for the summer semester – the players could not continue to work toward to requirements of grade point average and percentage of degree requirements complete.

Freeze is very pleased with how things turned out for his team in the spring.

However, three players that he did not name did not reach the 18-hour minimum. Those players are in discussions with counselors and faculty members to see what options might still be available to help them get there.

Freeze could have a final word on those three players as early as Friday or perhaps Monday.

“They are working with faculty right now to find any possible avenue they can to resolve their issue,” Freeze said. “I am not confident that will occur with all three.”

Among the players who have passed the hours, there will still be some other issues such as GPA that will need improvement.

Clearing the academic hurdles may not be enough for some to remain with the football team. Freeze said he will consider all factors for each individual case before deciding if he'll keep some players.

As far as those who have now met the 18-hours requirement, “I'm really confident that they all can make it (GPA), but even though they can make it, it doesn't mean that I will renew them. I am a visual guy. I want to look at the whole spectrum of the team, who made poor choices off the field, whether they continue to do that, what they bring to our team.

“I don't like to give up on anyone, but I know the situation we're in. A message has to be sent.

“But I'm confident that everyone could be eligible come fall except the three who may not get to 18 hours.”

...Lol. Going from a winning season two years ago to 6-6 last year is consistency? Sounds more like Mullen's been learning from Nutt...

Keep drinking that kool-aid.

Well guys,

look at it this way..Mstate went throught a very crappy time from 2001 til 2008, but now it's over and Mullen will win consistently from now on. So for us the 29 number will outgrow the 51. However for The rebelbears, you went through some of your best years and the losing will grow for the at least the next 5 years. It must be hard for you to take, but that is it.

So what should we say is MSU `s contributing factor for them being 29 and 51 since 2002 in the SEC .363 winning precentage ??

Just how did these substandard academic student ever get into the athletic programs at Ole Miss anyway? Someone up there in the high offices must have know or realized that they would become problems later down the road. Oh!! but I forgot Ole Miss is the School of Political Correctness and so is Miss State. Both have problems getting quality and competing athletics, so they used the fisherman's cast net effect.

"Mstate fought tooth and nail to keep our heritage and you hear that heritage ringing loud and proud every game. Shame on you rebelbears, for not standing up against tyranny."

Yeah right Turf......that's why you can only ring those gosh aweful bells when you're told to do so. It's slowly being pulled away in front of your eyes, you just don't know it yet.

You're absolutely correct DocJ. The TURD fans cried when Brassell changed his mind. Of course, Mullen tried to be "flashy" by flying to Aberdeen in that crop dusting helicopter, with hopes of impressing Channing Ward. How'd that work out for them??

Turfguy has found out that the Rebelbears football team is 23 wins and 43 losses in SEC conference games since 2003, the year the colonel was exiled. Turfguy also discovered that it was Tommy Tuberville who first mentioned that the rebel flag was hurting recruiting and the button pushers listened to him? Really? Wingnutt? Good Golly Miss Molly, Jackie Sherrill couldn't have done to Ole Meth what Tubs did. You guys should learn to stand up and fight for your rights. Mstate fought tooth and nail to keep our heritage and you hear that heritage ringing loud and proud every game. Shame on you rebelbears, for not standing up against tyranny.

That's a good laugh for the day. Mullen had Brassell comitted and lost him to THE University of Mississippi. My friends from That University Rebels Dislike crowed when Brassell committed there, but when he chose Ole Miss all I heard was how he would never play ...

It would be interesting to know the Rebelbears SEC record in football, since the exile of the colonel. I apologize, but I really don't remember when he was outcast. I will find out and report back.

turfguy... this guy freeze is a joke.

he contridicts himself three times in this article. once in the last two statements.

if he is really going to help ole miss , he needs to shut up and execute his plans. take the reigns he's ben given , and go. no need for trivial politically correct tiptoeing. and someone bring back colonel reb. he is the coolest college mascot ever

Mullen knew that it was risky with regards to Brassell and his study habits. Nutt was in deep poop and had to take the chance. If it is Brassell and he doesn't make it, what a waste of potentially great talent. Good study habits are developed in elementary school and parents are the ones who have to make sure it's developed. Can't fault the high school, by then it's too late. Huge Freeze had no idea what a mess this program was in. 14 straight SEC losses and counting....

I see Nick Brassel going to a JR College then hopefully back to Ole Miss if he doesn't Quit..

What is the Deal with Kids that Come out of South Panola.. Is that all they Teach is Football?? YOU HAVE TO STUDY AND GO TO CLASS!! Im hoping Coach Freeze can put it in these kids heads what it takes to succeed and move on to the next level.. UNlike Nutt who was more there for the $$$ then anything and leaving the Program in a mess like it was

My guess is that Ole Miss will be about the #6 or 7 seed in the SEC Tournament and could be playing in the second game. # 1 seed a tough one to call now, it is possible the Gators as #1 or #2 should they sweep Auburn only LSU has the edge over them. They have taken two of three from KY and SC. Seed 3 thru Seed 10 must have a very good and strong pitching staff to proceed up the ladder to the final. This is all my guess and it could be to the contrary.
