LSU-Ole Miss: It's usually a close game

A few links of interest on No. 1 LSU, which visits Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a 6 p.m. kick this Saturday ...

Among the Tigers' many strengths is depth at tailback. A third different back over the last four weeks led the team in rushing against Western Kentucky. Alfred Blue had 119 yards on nine carries as the Tigers awakened late to win going away.

It's not the running backs rotation, but the quarterbacks rotation that has many LSU fans scratching their heads. Les Miles was not clear about whether Jarrett Lee or Jordan Jefferson would start against Western Kentucky. Jefferson started, and Lee didn't appear until the game was well in hand.

No starter has been named for the Tigers' trip to Ole Miss.

Running back questions aside, LSU showed it can be dominant even when not at its best.

LSU will catch Ole Miss coming off perhaps its lowest point under Houston Nutt, a 27-7 loss to La. Tech. Yes, lower than the Jacksonville State loss, because in the 2010 season opener, the Rebels were competitive and had a chance to win until the very last play.

That wasn't the case against Tech, and the stadium was virtually empty, except for Tech fans, by the time the clock hit zero.

Traditionally, Ole Miss has played LSU close regardless of circumstances. Last year the Rebels were coming off a 52-14 loss to an average Tennessee team in Knoxville when they played the Tigers off their feet in Baton Rouge, losing 43-36.

Nutt is 2-1 against LSU at Ole Miss, a couple of memorable wins, 31-13 in Baton Rouge his first season and 25-23 in Oxford two years ago.

The last time Ole Miss was headed into coaching search - although Ed Orgeron's dismissal had not been announced - the Rebels played well with the Tigers early before fading in a 41-24 defeat. LSU was also ranked No. 1 that season.

Since 2000, Ole Miss is 3-8 against LSU. The only game in that span in which LSU completely dominated Ole Miss was 2005, Orgeron's first year, a 40-7 LSU win in Oxford.

The next season the Rebels had a chance to upset LSU in Baton Rouge but failed to recover a fumble late in regulation that likely would have sealed the win. LSU won 23-20 in overtime.

Will the simple fact of playing LSU bring a different level of focus and execution for Ole Miss this week? That's a question we'll ask later today.

yeah... I was thinking that any amount of playing time, barring an early injury, would prevent a redshirt...but while Im an expert on second guessing most coaching decisions. *joke* I didnt know if there might have been other exceptions i wasnt aware of that PA may have been referring to.

its a shame he cant or didnt would be nice to know t the very least he might have the opportunity for 2 solid seasons as the upper classman of the bunch.

deuce: I may be way off, but from a redshirt question and answer earlier in the year (can't remember the players name) the conversation made it sound like if the player played ANY amount of time on the field then they couldn't get redshirted. I may be way off though.

Yep, PA, 78 years today, and in prep and fasting for a colon scope tomorrow. it been a long haul since the days back in Tula. Think of that Tula Baptist Church were I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. A bit of a fish tale here. I was baptized in Uncle Brooks Cole fishing pond North of Tula. at about that spot I later caught one of the biggest bass that I ever landed.

Wild Rebel, Brunetti is a mobile quarterback, and he's been handled poorly this season, a redshirt wasted on a half of play.

Mackey hasn't been great, but I keep going back to the OL. I think that's the root problem.

From what I could see of Brunetti early, accuracy was an issue. As the season's gone on, he's fallen behind in the development by not getting the No. 1 reps in practice. I don't see them turning to him now unless it's some sort of very specialized surprise role.

JB, isn't today your birthday? Did I read that in one of your posts a while back?

wait a minute PA...are you serious about the redshirt waste? I mean after he was settled in at #3 there was absolutely no excuse not to set him up for a red shirt and another 3 good years to grow as a QB. Especially after anyone with any sense realized there was no shot whatsoever at a bowl.

PA, what's the deal with Brunetti? Isn't he a mobile quarterback. He went from Game 1 starter to never be seen again in less than a quarter of play. Mackey just isn't and hasn't gotten the job done. I understand that Stoudt is not a mobile QB and since our offensive line can't block a jr high team he wouldn't fare very well (as seen against La Tech). But isn't Brunetti supposed to be a mobile QB?

JB.......nepotism and political correctness that has alienated a large portion of their everyday fan base, thats how they got here.

PA,I don't think ole miss will score against the lsu. could be they will not score again this season. it is of shame to see that once great and proud powerful Rebel football sink so low into the sewer and pits of hell. I Just hope GOD has not forsaken them. Disgraceful in a sense. Just how could they get themselves into such a mess?
