Chris Low covers the SEC for ESPN and is an occasional guest with me on The Ole Miss Beat on Rebel Sports Radio.

One of those occasions was with today's program, which is finishing up at the moment but will be available from now to eternity in the on demand section of the free Rebel Sports Radio app for iPhone and Android.

Chris keeps a good handle on the SEC overall, and at a time when predictions for Ole Miss are bleak, his are not bubbly but not as bleak as some others.

Low: “It's going to be a struggle for Ole Miss to get to a bowl game this year, but I would not count that out either. I think if they get off early and get some things going in their direction, they sort of settle that quarterback position and don't give teams as many easy things on defense, I think they have a chance to maybe get to six wins.”

Of course, getting off to a fast start early is entirely doable, and in my opinion it will be an emotional setback if the Rebels do not win three of their four non-conference games, all four of which come before Oct. 1.

I'm not counting a win against Texas. Low isn't predicting one either, but isn't ruling it out.

“It's so important that they gain some confidence early. You open with Central Arkansas, then UTEP, both at home. Then Texas comes in. They really should be 2-0 at that point, and Texas rolls in, Vaught-Hemingway would be rocking. You play well and maybe steal one there, but at that point you want to be no worse than 3-1 going into the Alabama game.”

A road trip to Tulane follows Texas on the schedule.

Most Ole Miss fans I've spoken with are not counting on a bowl game this season.

It has been my contention that this team really needs to break the SEC losing streak. It's hard to call a losing season a success, and the Rebels would have to have multiple SEC wins to avoid that.

But there are different levels of disaster. You can have a losing season, play and compete well in some of those losses, and have a feel-good experience. Yes, the term “moral victories” comes to mind here. It's not what any team strives for, but what this program needs at the end of 2012 is to have a strong sense of belief that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that the end of wilderness is near.

The feel-good experience coupon is good for 2012 only. A winning season and bowl game should be a much more realistic goal in 2013 if the proper steps in rebuilding are taken this season.

Here's Low on the task of breaking the SEC losing streak: “If you can build some confidence that first month of the season, then I think Texas A&M in Oxford is certainly winnable, I think Auburn in Oxford is certainly winnable. Then they get a break before they finish out that last stretch which is really, really difficult. You've got Arkansas, Georgia, Vandy, LSU. If you're going to get one you want to get one in that first stretch, before you go into that final stretch, and I like their chances against A&M and Auburn, those back-to-back home games in October.”

you ole miss fans are the same every year. You think that just because you had limited success in the early 60's, that somehow that will carry over into present day. WRONGO!! All you have done in the 2,000's is embarrass yourselves, the state and the SEC. You are constantly scraping the floor beneath the table for other school's scraps and then those guys either flunk out, break the law or both!

Well myops2, you sound like a feeblebear fanatic who thinks that the blackbears belong in the SEC. They should've gotten out while the getting was good. They will field the most pathetic team that has ever been put on an SEC football field. This team will be lucky to win 3 games and that's giving them wins over Central Ark, tulane and Utep! I keep reading about this turfguy dude. He must have really lit a fire under the rears of the blackbear nation. I wish I knew him, so I could shake his hand.

Deaconblues you sound like turfguy enough to make me think you are turfguy. I see you still have your obsession with the Rebels and still like creeping around Ole Miss articles.

OM will not win more than 4 games this year & they certainly will not win the Egg Bowl because State is the better team by far. As for WildRebel, here's State's OOC games, Jackson State (FCS), Troy (FBS), South Alabama (Transitioning FBS Team...still counts towards a bowl game), & MTSU (FBS)...so you need to do your research before posting.

Deacon, I guess you don't understand my point about the 7 wins. State has 2 FCS teams (formerly Div 2) in Jackson State and South Alabama. They can only count one of those wins, presuming they win both, towards bowl eligibility. That means 6 wins will not qualify them for a bowl. And it doesn't matter how "high profile" you think Dan Mullen is, it won't make him eligible for a bowl game.

And given his 3 year history, he has yet to win an SEC Western division game against anyone not named Ole Miss...he'll have to do better this year if he wants to go bowling. State may very well be 7-0 going into the Bama game, but I wouldn't look past any of the 3 SEC games they have.

Deacon, why are you even over here? You and your humpback coach need to get dose of reality! 7 and 0? Your puppies will poop all over themselves and be lucky to win 6 games. You are just a Idiot trolling around trying to start up some trouble. Get back into your doghouse and scratch some fleas!

Wow! Bowl game? Beat A&M? Beat Auburn? Win 3 or 4 games vs A&M, Aub, Vandy and State? State will need 7 wins? Heck State will be 7 and 0 going into the Bama game! Even if the unthinkable happened and State ended up with only 6 wins, the fact that Dan Mullen is such a high profile coach and widely respected around the country, that alone gets State into a bowl game. I don't think you are asking the right question. The queston is, what BCS bowl game will State be in? Better get back to the cave, because Bear season opens up in 31 days. Rebelbears will lose the battle of the bears and start the season 0 and 1.

I love the optimism, but I am worried about beating UTEP, not to mention winning even one SEC game! Our defense is rice paper thin! That being said, I believe the streak will end against Vandy. If we can go 500 at home, that would be huge. The passing teams like UTEP and A&M could carve our secondary up like a Thanksgiving turkey. 5 wins will be huge!!!!

Any of the 4 SEC home games are winnable with A&M, Auburn, Vandy, and State all coming to Oxford. I don't think we'll win all 4 but it would be great to get 2 or 3 wins out of those 4 games. The 4 road SEC games will be brutal. It would be interesting if an Egg Bowl victory was needed by both teams to become bowl eligible this year, because I believe State will need 7 wins since they have 2 FCS teams this year...PA correct me if I'm wrong there.
