The highlights from Houston Nutt's Monday press conference. ...

- Nutt express his disappointment over the tackling at Arkansas, which rushed for 197 yards, 84 yards above its average. "That back wasn't especially fast last week, and we had done such a good job the week before," he said.

Players say the problem is not a lack of effort and that they need to do a better job of fitting in gaps and finishing plays.

"Every time we've given up a long run we've had at least three missed tackles," Nutt said.

- Nutt said Sunday's practice was good work as players try to get past the "bitter taste" of a 38-24 loss at Arkansas.

- Auburn QB Cam Newton is this week's challenge for a team that is trying to find its tackling groove. Newton (6-6, 250) is 62 pounds heavier than the Rebels' biggest cornerback, Marcus Temple, and will be at least 20 pounds heavier than anyone he'll see once he breaks past the line of scrimmage. He is the sixth-leading rusher in the NCAA and has run for 603 yards and nine touchdowns in the last three games.

- Nutt says Ole Miss hasn't been a complete 60-minute team and isn't taking advantage of opportunities, but he sees signs of good things.

- Ole Miss quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is one of only four QBs in the nation to average at least 50 rushing yards and 180 passing yards.

- The Ole Miss offensive line leads the SEC with just seven sacks allowed this season, a tribute to Masoli's scrambling abililty.

- Nutt is 6-6 lifetime against Auburn, 1-1 as the Ole Miss coach.

Gene Cheez-it is not a good coach per sey. He has surrounded himself with good coaches, which is the key in this business (and any business really). We have done a poor job in bringing in good assistant coaches (see - Dave Rader). Alot of that has to do with Nutt's desire to have full control of the offense. Tyrone Nix is a good defensive coordinator but he was another "throw-away" when Spurrier got tired of his defenses letting his offense down. Nix is pretty good, but he has really taken a hit with the swap of D-Line Coaches between us and Auburn. Tracy Rocker made a huge difference in our d-linemen, and play will continue to decline, especially when all of the guys that learned technique from Rocker are out of the system. It's all about your support staff, and Nutt appears to be ok with handling the load himself. You can't do it like that in this day and age. He needs to worry about overall team management, and less about what play to call on 2nd and 9 1/2 on the 37 yard line with 8:52 left in the 1st Qtr.

Churn, I couldn't agree more. What strikes me is that our leadership in administration is much more tolerant of mediocrity. When you look at Auburn, Alabama, Florida, and LSU, if a coach has two down years, they're getting a new coach. We always get someone else's throw-away coach or someone that knows some one at OM. Auburn and Tenn go out and get a young hungry guy and give them a chance for two years. I had never heard of Gene Chic-fil-a until Auburn hired him. I never knew he was this caliber of a coach. I think we need some changes at the top at OM. We need someone more progressive that doesn't accept 8-4 as a great season. We need to stipulate things in these coach's contracts. I hear that at Alabama, Nick Saban, has a clause that if he loses two in a row to Auburn, he is gone and the same for Auburn coach Gene Chicfila. We are paying these folks enough to live the life of a king, its not too much to expect a national championship within 5 years. With all those lawyers over a t Oxford, seems like someone would know how to write a contract. Go Rebs!

I don 't think Ole Miss has played in a famed noted bowl game since Archie Manning and Johnny Vaught days. Yes they have appeared in bowls since then, but not in a national eye of importance. Later years two (2) Cotton Bowl victories, but the Cotton Bowl just an also ran bowl appearance, not rated up there with the big boys. This year not good for the Rebels. Their bowl game this season could be the Egg Bowl. In 1971 Ole Miss had a record of 10-2 and won the Peach Bowl. That team was far from being a super team, even with that record. Then into the wilderness they entered. Good teams here and there but nothing spectacular.

Hopeful, next season thing will change and look better for them. ????????
