Channing Ward has been cleared by the NCAA, Ole Miss has announced.

An All-American defensive end from Aberdeen, Ward is considered the prized recruit in the signing class. He's also the last to get in, and that's not good news for the learning and acclimation that takes place for any newcomer.

In the off-season Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze mentioned Ward as a guy he felt could contribute early, particularly as the Rebels seek a playmaker off the edge.

Defensive coordinator Dave Wommack has experiemented with different position changes in the search for that playmaker. Linebacker Ralph Williams has moved down to end, and tight end E.J. Epperson has moved over to defense from offense. Earlier this week Epperson was working with the first team.

How quickly Ward contributes will have a lot to do with his physical condition and how quickly he picks up the defense.

The most important thing for the Rebels, though, was getting him certified, and that happened earlier today.

rebelchris,UHS was good but so was Amory another team within that Little 10 North Miss conference. That was the year that Ole Miss Rebels won the national championship, beating a revenge game with LSU 21-0 in the Sugar Bowl. The Rebs only allowed 21 points scored against them for the entire year. Our friends at Miss State had something to crow about that year they were for all purposes Basketball champions, Bailey Howell days. Not sure, but I think the were undefeated that year but the Miss Gov would not allow them to participate in tournament. Yes I get harped on by some Ole Miss fans for bring up the past successful years of Rebels. Well, but the way I feel about out it is, if they did it back then there is no reason why they cannot do it once again. I believe they have the Coach in Mr. Freeze that can put them back onto that winning road. In my opinion football is the only sport now that they are lacking in. but agree with you things will change for the better Aim High!

It must be great fear to those in the camp at Miss State that the Rebels are rising and will to fight once again.

I am actually glad that something good has happened for the blackbears. I really am! I don't believe that Ward will make a big difference. But in these days, when the sun has been refusing to shine on Otown, it is good that you all have something to rejoice over. I still don't see more than 3 wins this year, but every long journey begins with the first step.

Churn, I believe the university high school you speak of could also beat the ole miss teams over the last few years. BUT, I believe you may will have an ole miss team to watch and be proud of over the next few years coming up. i too have been disappointed by ole miss and many of the decisions made by the powers that be, but again i think things will begin to look up soon.

We resided in Aberdeen once and our oldest son was born there, but to me he was the only All-American that ever came out from there. I did attend the Oxford University HS football games when they played Aberdeen, and UHS always beat the badly. one of our hero's there was the late Doctor Dabbs he and GOD delivered our son. WE also remember the Pastor of the Baptist Church, he performed our wedding ceremony at Yocona Baptist manor. That was many moons ago.

Sorry to say, but I guess I have totally lost contact with ole Miss football, I do not know who this Channing Ward guy is. I have been reviewing the NFL players rosters, that I frequently did in the past years, but very few Ole Miss players that I see, I recognize not many on the list never heard of them before. Mannings, and Patrick Willis yes, my man Powe on Chiefs yes and the Maclaster as well, and most of all the other names did not register, so guess Ole Miss is just a ghost team that I once liked and admired slowly drifting away off into the sunset.
