While very frustrated with his offense following Tuesday's practice, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze felt better today, but he's still looking for consistency.

There were solid plays and some big gainers, fewer turners than Tuesday, but on the whole the group needs to follow big play with big play.

There were some nice gains in the run game, most of those coming on the perimeter and more than one of them from the newest wide receiver, Randall Mackey.

If Mackey stays academically eligible, he will do good things in this offense. Today he hurdled a defender and kept on running.

He also threw an interception, a nice defensive play by junior college transfer cornerback Dehendret Collins, who was step for step with Donte Moncrief, shielded him with his body and then made a play.

Defense, as it has been much of the spring, was flying around making plays. That's good to see, but it also has to do with the offensive line. That group is very much a work in progress.

After practice Barry Brunetti described the quarterbacks as a "two-horse race." Honestly, it's been that way pretty much the whole spring. The scrimmages this Saturday and next will be important in determining which horse, whether Brunetti or junior college transfer Bo Wallace, is the winner. Both made good throws today. Wallace had the best pass of the day, I thought, in early team drills when he rolled right and found Terrell Grant down the sideline and placed the ball just beyond the outstretched arm of cornerback Abdul Bangura. It was one of several nifty catches on the day by Grant. Keep an eye on Grant as Freeze looks for depth at receiver.

One other note on quarterbacks. Mackey is still the third guy. It doesn't appear that anyone else is stepping up to take additional reps because he's at receiver. In an emergency situation I would think he'd move back to QB.
