This week's Neighbors section includes an article by one of my high school correspondents, Quitley Ivy of Shannon High School. Her contribution this week is about a Shannon classmate, CJ Montgomery, who was elected Beta Club state vice president for 2009-10. Montgomery was elected during the Beta state convention last week in Tupelo.

Believing and faith can make great things happen. Shannon High School Betas believed and had faith and with crossed fingers, multiple prayers, and much sweat, Shannon Beta member CJ Montgomery, was voted the state Beta vice president during the annual convention last week in Tupelo.

The theme for the campaign was “The Beta Bus.” The slogan:  “In Montgomery we trust to drive our Beta bus.”

The Betas had to prepare and present an original campaign skit and a campaign board in order for CJ to be recognized as a candidate.  After all of their hard work, the campaign board was awarded third place in the competition.

CJ also had to give a prepared campaign speech. He developed his ideas over a period of time and was confident that he was ready, but when he got in front of the spotlight, he just lit up the stage.

“We worked really hard and we all believed he could do it,” said Vicki Crumpton, one of the Beta sponsors.

Obviously, the hard work was well worth it.

Everyone knows that the Beta Club members are the cream of the crop because they have great  character and fantastic grades.

“The members are strong, innovative and intelligent young adults who strive to maintain high academic standards and also high standards of conduct,” said Amanda Viator, a Beta sponsor.

“Let Us Lead by Serving Others” - that is a great motto for this club, isn’t it? They definitely abide by this and for that we are very proud.

Congratulations to CJ and the Beta Club for their great accomplishments, but for now they have to sweat it out until nationals in June.  Keep up the good work, Betas.  We can’t wait until August when we come back to school and see our new national Beta vice president, CJ Montgomery.
