Benny Robinson

NEW ALBANY – Benny Wayne Robinson, 58, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. He was born Sept. 27, 1953, in Tippah County to Lee Burton Robinson and Dovie Barnes Robinson. He was a truck driver for Merchants Truck Line, MST Express, the City of New Albany and Union County. He was a good father, grandfather, great-grandfather and stepfather. He loved being around his family and tried to stay active in their lives. He was a Baptist.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Funeral Service Chapel in New Albany with the Rev. Randy Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in the Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Robinson of New Albany; his stepfather, Henry Allen of New Albany; a daughter, Jennifer Yarbrough (Tim) of New Albany; a son, Gary Robinson (Casey) of New Albany; two stepsons, Brian Raines (Jessica) of Nashville, Tenn., and Brad Raines (Mandy) of Atlanta, Ga.; five sisters, Susan Leslie (Jack) of Mooreville, Bonnie Garrison (Charles) of New Albany, Helen Jordan of New Albany, Shirley Joslin of Saltillo and Lisa Moore of Ripley; three brothers, Danny Robinson (Elizabeth) of New Albany, Billy Robinson (Dawn) of New Albany and Robbie Moore of Booneville; three granddaughters, Faith Butler, Cydnie Lahey and Beth Yarbrough; a stepgranddaughter, Savannah Raines, and two great-grandchildren Alana Butler and Isabella Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Wayne Robinson; two sisters, Betty Smith and Jo Anne Robinson; and three brothers, Kenny Robinson, Jimmy Robinson and Rickey Robinson.

Pallbearers will be Danny Robinson Jr., Tyler Leslie, Ricky Jordan, James Rhea, Pat Jordan and Randy Owens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

WALNUT – Michael Connie Reed, 52, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at his home in Corinth.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Harmony Cemetery in Walnut. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of the arrangements.

Wilma Followell

CORINTH – Wilma Catherine Followell, 90, died Monday, April 23, 2012, in Corinth. She was born July 9, 1921, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Emory and Ada Trowbridge Bocock. She married Aubrey Leon Followell and they spent their early years together in Columbus, Ind., raising a family. Her husband’s work sent them to Oneida, Tenn., and later to Tupelo where they lived for many years. She worked as a day care center owner while in Oneida. After her husband’s retirement, they became flea market vendors, selling their own homemade crafts. She was also an excellent seamstress, making hand painted dolls, stuffed animals and pillows.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Warren Jones officiating. Private burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Taylor (Tommy) of Goodrich, Texas, Brenda Henderson (Gary Briggs) of Corinth and Judith Koger of Tupelo; one son, Larry Followell (Ann) of Curry, Ala.; five grandchildren, Pamela Taylor, Lance Taylor (Chelsea), Steve Koger and Mike Koger (Sara); four great-granddaughters, Tasneem, twins Ameera and Saara, and Noora Kalid; four great-grandsons, Elisa Aubrey, Ezra Taylor, and Jacob and Drew Koger; extended family including, Sonja Sue Piper, Chuck and Carlin Tally, Eddie Briggs (Pam), Rhonda Kirk (Keith) and Robin Ferguson (Joe).

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Aubrey Followell, who died July 31, 2008; her grandson, Scott Henderson; her twin sister, Alma; her brother, Charlie; and her son-in-law, Clifton Koger.

Visitation will be noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

RIPLEY – Vance Kyle Collier, 93, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Golden Living Nursing Home in Batesville. He was born Dec. 27, 1918, to Joe Hill and Martha Addielene Janes Collier in Ashland. He was a businessman, a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Springdale Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Springdale Baptist Church in Ripley with Bro. Randy Hamilton, Bro. Stacy McKee and Bro. Bill Baker officiating. Burial will be in the Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Ripley. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Laura Medlin Collier of Ripley; one daughter, Ann Collier Stevenson (C.L.) of Batesville; three grandchildren, Todd Collier Hensley (Robbin) of Brandon, Scott Stevenson of Winona and Paige Stevenson Daniels (Joey) of Inverness; nine great-grandchildren, Ashtyn, Aspen and Aliza Hensley, Sara Glenn, Halle Ruth and Maddie Stevenson, Mary Weldon, Joey and Avery Daniels; two sisters, Joyce Bernice Smith (Jim) of Bartlett, Tenn., and Iva Manning of Southaven; two brothers-in-law, Donald “Pete” Medlin (Betty) and Lecoy Medlin, both of Ripley; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Collier of Memphis and Gynell Foote (Billy) of Manchester, Tenn.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Marshall Hill, David Medlin, Stanley Manning, David Myers, Ricky Woods, Bobby Shan Medlin, Morris Belk and Eddie Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class at Springdale Baptist Church.

Wilda Fugitt

BOONEVILLE – Wilda Juanita Bane Fugitt, 82, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. She was born Sept. 27, 1929, in Booneville to Rosco and Madgeline Smith Bane. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Booneville, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Ole Miss Alumni Association. She was a public school teacher for 32 years. She enjoyed her flower garden.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Booneville Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Glen Jones officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicky Hood (Randy) of Booneville; a brother, Sonny Bane (Pat) of Booneville; a sister, Wanda McCuiston; a very special friend and caregiver, Alice Southern.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Fugitt Jr., in June 1977; her parents; and a brother, Bobby Bane.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home.

Leomia Carr

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Leomia Merritt Carr, 86, died Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. She was born July 25, 1925, in Aberdeen to Bennie and Callie Merritt. She graduated from Aberdeen Colored High School in Aberdeen, Okolona Junior College in Okolona and Rust College in Holly Springs. She did additional studies at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tenn., Delta State University in Cleveland and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. Her teaching career spanned 44 years in the Aberdeen School District, beginning at Jarmon Rosenwald School. She taught at Shivers Junior and Senior High, Aberdeen Middle and Prairie Elementary before retiring on May 31, 1989. She was a member of New Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Aberdeen.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hebron M.B. Church in Egypt with the Rev. Sam Crawford officiating. Burial will be in New Hebron Cemetery. Carter Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Ann Carr Cunningham of Lake Charles, La.; a son, Merritt Stanley Carr (Debra) of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Dr. Robert L. Merritt (Thelma) of Aberdeen; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Hykes Merritt McLean of West Point and Beverly L. Carr of Chicago; three granddaughters, Carlene C. White (Travis) of Richmond, Va., Amanda Cunningham of Richmond, Va., and Amber S. Carr of Houston, Texas; one great-grandson, Jackson Bennett White of Richmond, Va.; two nieces, Callie Merritt-Jones (Torrance) of Lees Summit, Mo., and Valerie Carr of Gary, Ind.; three nephews, Dexter R. Merritt (Zina) of Gaithersburg, Md., Wallace Hatten (June) of Gary, Ind., and Melvin Hatten Jr. (Molly) of Gary, Ind.

Bill Gist

NETTLETON – William Harvey “Bill” Gist, 71, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, suddenly at his home. He was born July 8, 1940, in Itawamba County to Amos Roads and Vina Pruitt Gist. He lived most of his life in Lee County. He was a retired factory worker and a Baptist. He enjoyed being with his family, his friends and his animals.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Nettleton with the Rev. Jerry Guess officiating. A private family burial will be in Jones Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Castleberry Gist of Nettleton; three daughters, Marilyn Carter (Douglas) and Glenda Orsborn (Michael) of Nettleton, and Tammy Baucom (Tim) of Columbus; three sisters, Betty Worthey (James) and Bonnie Guess (Jerry) of Nettleton and Juanita Anthony (Vance) of Tupelo; two brothers, Clyde and Jimmy Gist (Edwinna) of Nettleton; eight grandchildren, Bradley Gist, Jeremy Carter, Sean Baucom, Amberle Baucom, Stephen Baucom, Allison Hester, Matthew Hester and Hanna Hester; two great-grandchildren; two special friends, Hollis and Diane Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Gist, Sean Baucom, Chris Gist, Kevin Gist, Cory Gist and Darrell Guess.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremy Carter and Hollis Brown.

HORN LAKE – Arine Falkner Wooten, 72, formerly of Holly Springs, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven.

CORINTH – Tavarus Dewayne Holland, 29, formerly of Holly Springs, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Newell M.B. Church at Red Banks. Burial will be in Mt. Newell Memorial Garden at Red Banks. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs is in charge of the arrangements.

Binky Hatchett

PETERSBURG, Va. – Robert Lee “Binky” Hatchett, 61, died Wednesday. April 18, 2012, at his residence in Petersburg, Va. He was born Aug. 25, 1951, to M.H. and Frances Hatchett in Houston. He was an outstanding athlete while in high school. He entered the U.S. Army in 1975 and retired in 1994 as a Master Sergeant. After service he worked for the Prince George County Zoning Department where he retired in 2011. He was a member of Farewell Baptist Church in Petersburg. He loved people and life.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Houston Second Baptist Church. The Rev. Eugene Brandon will officiate. Burial wilth full military honors will be in Houston City Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Claudette Hatchett of Petersburg, Va.; three daughters, Chelsea Hatchett and Monica Hatchett, both of Prince George County, Va., and Dr. Tasha Darden of Chesapeake, Va.; two sons, Travis Hatchett of Houston and Darren Edwards of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Bobbie Jean Catledge and Mary Frances (James) Gunn, both of Houston, and Martha Chandler of Jackson; two aunts, Keteria Farr and Oberia Lipsey, both of Pontotoc; and one grandson, Trey Hatchett.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and two hours before services on Saturday at Houston Second Baptist Church.

Eula Mae Johnson

FULTON – Eula Mae Johnson, 94, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012. She was born on Jan. 25, 1918, to William Houston and Ethel Tubb Miller in Mississippi. She was the oldest member of the Sandy Springs Baptist Church. She loved quilting and making bead necklaces.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Springs Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home of Fulton is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include son, Larry Ted Johnson (Frances) of Fulton; daughters, Patsy Thomas of Fulton, Pam Simoneaux (Mike) of Fulton;daughter-in-law, Dollie Johnson; brother, Chester Miller of Tupelo; sisters, Ollie Rae Wiygul of Fulton, Elizabeth Morrow (Frank) of Fulton; eight grandchildren, Brad Thomas (Dedra), Cindy Jamerson (James), Christopher Helm, Amanda Johnson, Kayla Johnson (Brandon), Keith Johnson (Melba), Doug Johnson (Patti) and Ann Albritton; one stepgrandchild, Matthew Simoneaux; eight great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Johnson; her parents; one son, Charles Johnson; four brothers, Leslie “Pete” Miller, J.T. Miller, Bobby Miller and Ellie Hugh Miller; four sisters, Flora Lee Miller, Naomi Wouldridge, Pearl Boldin and Jimmie Mae Miller; one great-grandson, Harrison Reid Thomas; and one great-great-grandson, Phillip Bishop.

SALTILLO – Willie Curtis Billingsley, 71, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born in Baldwyn on Oct. 14, 1940, to Hubert Billingsley and Sarah Kemp. He was a member of Bethel C.M.E. Church in Saltillo and a retired employee of the City of Guntown.

Life celebration service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel C.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Charles McGaughy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Grayson-Porter's Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his children, Cynthia Agnes, Virgnia McMillian, Jessica Mister, Lula Mister and Willie Curtis Mister, all of Guntown; the mother of his children, Jessie Mae Mister of Guntown; two special nephews he reared as his own, Mickey Billingsley of Ripley and Nach Ward of Guntown; three sisters, Lois Toney of Las Vegas, Nev., Ida Ruth Pounds and Jeanette Merriweather of Jackson, Tenn.; one brother, Dale Jones of Dallas, Texas; a special friend, Robert Williomon of Baldwyn; six grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Ann Billingsley and Sadara Jones; and one child, Dorothy Faye Mister.

Lena Hickman

TUPELO – Lena Mae Hickman, 91, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the Cedars Health Care Center Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Vardaman to Lena and Sam Cook. She was a member of Lane Chapel C.M.E. Church. where she served as a member on the Stewardess Board, Usher Board and Josephine Stone Circle. She attended Lee County Training School. She was a retired employee of the OB-GYN Clinic. Compassionate toward others, she was blessed with the eagerness to nourish the souls of many through the preparation of various dishes and desserts. Her eagerness to prepare such dishes enabled her to cater various events in and around Tupelo. She was the widow of Sylvester "Ben" Hickman.

Life celebration service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lane Chapel C.M.E. Church with Pastor Cheryl Pinson officiating. Burial will follow in Porter's Memorial Park. Grayson-Porter's Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her children, Jimmy (Sharon) Hickman of Tupelo, Robert (Debra) Hickman of Killeen, Texas, Kathy Hickman of Converse, Texas; nine grandchildren, including her special grandson, Michael Sanders of Tupelo; 13 great-grandchildren; a special caregiver, Theresa “Red” Hartley; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five sisters, Annie White, Flora Hodges, Annabelle Gilliam, Laura Thomas and Jennie Grice; and three brothers, Wilson Cook, Milton Cook and Leonard Cook.

Viewing will begin at 4 p.m. today at the J.W. Porter Chapel with family and friends hour from 6 to 7 p.m. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service Saturday.

CYPRUS, Texas – Jerry Wayne Goodson, 55, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the North Cyprus Medical Center. He was born Nov. 3, 1956, in Calhoun County. He was a certified HVAC technician, serving heating units and air conditioning. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Southern Funeral Chapel in Houston with Bro. Mike Stowell officiating. Burial will be in Ellzey Cemetery in Calhoun County.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Dixon Goodson of Cyprus, Texas; four daughters, Angela Lacefield of Sarah, Jennifer Mahan of Independence, Amanda Goodson of Sarah and Deborah Goodson of Sarah; one son, Jerry “Jay” Goodson Jr. of Houston, Texas; his stepfather, Bob Skaggs and Francis of Millington, Tenn.; and 19 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Wayne Goodson and Lillie Ruth Williams Skaggs; two infant brothers, Donnie and Jamie; his grandparents, Preston and Eunice Williams, and Gattis and Lillian Goodson; and a special uncle, Bro. Grady Williams.

Pallbearers include Lynn Barnett, Ricky Williams, Danny Williams, Dewayne Williams, Mitchell Williams and Buddy Pepper;

BLUE MOUNTAIN – Edna Cook, 93, died Friday, April 20, 2012, at her home. She was a member of Union Prospect M.B. Church. She was dedicated to taking care of her children, and helping family and friends by doing whatever she could.

A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flatwood Grove Holiness Church with Pastor John Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Beasley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her children, Lexie Simmons of Youngstown, Ohio, Elois Gilliland of Belleville, Ill., Mary Coleman of Lansing, Ill., Shirley Johnson of Blue Mountain and Charles Harris of East St. Louis, Ill.; 15 stepchildren; 16 grandchildren, 29 stepgrandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren and 55 stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons-in-law, F.D. Simmons, Bobby Coleman and Otis Johnson, and one grandson, Patrick Gilliland.

HOLLY SPRINGS – Clay Jones, 64, died Friday, April 20, 2012, at Alliance Healthcare in Holly Springs.

Ethel Sykes

BELDEN – Ethel Louise Sykes, 65, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Sancutary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born in Detroit, Mich., to Bernice Sykes and the late Joe Lee Sykes. She was a member of Kimble Chapel M.B. Church in Belden. She was a former employee of Cedars Health Care, Independent Furniture Supply and Beverly Health Care, where she was the certified dietary manager for seven years. Known as “Momma Ethel,” she loved cooking, helping others, her family, taking care of children and, mostly, her Lord.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kimble Chapel M.B. Church. The Rev. Lewis Lockridge will officiate. Burial will be in Kimble Chapel Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her mother, Bernice Sykes of Belden; four daughters, Treaya (O'Neal) Kolheim, Marquitta (Eric) Cooperwood, Sherelle (Rapheal) Richardson and Felicia Crayton, all of Tupelo; two sisters, Forestine (Robert) Alexander of Detroit, Mich., and Mary Mitchell of Tupelo; four brothers, Willie James (Harolene) Sykes of Phoenix, Ariz., O.V. (Dorothy) Sykes of Mt. Clemons, Mich., Ronald (Regina) Sykes of Palmetto and Ricky Sykes of Los Angeles, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

HOLLY SPRINGS – A.C. Wilson, 60, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at his home in Holly Springs.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Comfort CME Church in Waterford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in repose at the church from 10 to 10:55 a.m. Saturday.

Luella Floyd

SARDIS – Luella Floyd, 79, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at her daughter's residence in Sardis. She was a native of Panola County and a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel M.B. Church. She loved to have fun and her family. She was the widow of Wiley Floyd.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Sardis. The Rev. Clifton Ward will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Como. Kenneth I Roberson Funeral Home of Sardis is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by four daughters, Dianne Cox of Byhalia, Dorothy Butts and Ida Dean, both of Sardis, and Shelia Webb of Southaven; two sons, Wilson Floyd of Sardis and Jessie James Floyd of Byhalia; one brother, David Danner of Memphis; 15 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

HOLLY SPRINGS – Chesley Thorne Smith, 101, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012.

CALHOUN CITY – Jane Magness Hardin, 82, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Calhoun County Nursing Home. She was born April 6, 1930, in Calhoun County. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs with the Rev. Kenneth Armstrong and the Rev. Casey Jones officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery. Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Rufus Lewis Hardin; one son, Tony (Dot) Hardin of Calhoun City; one daughter, Terri (William) Hardin McDonald of Grenada; sisters, Alma West of Slate Springs, Lucy Jackson of Southaven, Ruth McGougan of Madison, Ala., Virginia McGougan of Madison, Ala.; brother, Kenneth Magness of Batesville and J.W. Magness Jr. of Senatobia; grandchildren, Karma (Scott) Simmons and Julie (Mark) Turner; great-grandchild, Reed Simmons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.S. Magness Sr. and Lucille Denton Magness.

Pallbearers will be Scott Simmons, Greg McDonald, Mark Turner, David Macon, Richard Easley and Shelton Williams.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church.
