BATESVILLE – Willie Thomas Matthews, 81, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at his home in Batesville. He was formerly of Benton County.

CORINTH – Gilbert Lee Whitaker Jr., 66, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

ABERDEEN – Doyle Womble Herndon, 81, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at his residence. He was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Monroe County to George Kenneth Herndon and Cleo Jones Herndon. He was a lifelong resident of Aberdeen. He graduated from Aberdeen High School, where he was a member of the Monroe County Ham Radio Club. He was a retired general manager of the Aberdeen Electric Department, where he worked for 36 years. He was a member of the National Guard as well as involved in the Korean conflict. He was a member of Aberdeen First Christian Church. He enjoyed hunting.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Bro. David Foreman and Bro. George Peavy officiating. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one son, Dennis E. Herndon (Nona) of Aberdeen; one daughter, Janice R. English (Steve) of Aberdeen; one sister, Joyce Ann Peavy (George) of Slyvania, Ga.; one brother, Billy Herndon (Mary Green) of Aberdeen; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and a special friend and caregiver, Toby Luker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nellie Ruth Herndon; his son, Kenneth Ray Herndon; one sister, Doris Forsyeth, and two brothers, Frank Harold Herndon and Robert Herndon.
Pallbearers will be Brian Herndon, Rob English, John Allmond, Bill Herndon, Leroy Jones and Frank Herndon.

STAR CITY, Ark. – Ernest Lee Bright, 44, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Sperry Reaves Jr.
RIPLEY – Sperry Ellis Reaves Jr., 67, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was born Sept. 4, 1944, to Sperry E. Reaves Sr. and the late Mildred Earline Gaillard Reaves. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Ripley. He and his wife, Martha, owned and operated Reaves Cream Cup for a number of years. He was a volunteer fireman for the Ripley Fire Department for 25 years and served as Alderman for the City of Ripley.
He served more than 30 years in the funeral service industry. He was manager and funeral director for Ripley Funeral Home for 20 years. He was past district governor of the Mississippi Funeral Directors Association. He served on the initial Board of Directors of Allied Funeral Associates Company. He was actively serving on the Board of Allied Funeral Associates Insurance Company and Allied Funeral Holdings Inc. He was loved by his family and everyone who knew him.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jack Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Tippah Memorial Garden. Ripley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Carmichael Reaves of Ripley; one daughter, Janet R. Morton of Ripley; two sons, John C. Reaves and Sperry E. “Chip” Reaves III, both of Ripley; his father, Sperry E. Reaves Sr. of Ripley; one sister, Sherry R. Tapp (Tommy) of Amory; one brother, Lonnie E. Reaves of Ripley; eight grandchildren, Mindy Morton Preston (Adam), Kelly Morton, Dylan Morton, Dalton C. Reaves, Anslee Reaves and Laura Beth Reaves, all of Ripley, LaKann C. Reaves and Sperry E. “Quade” Reaves IV, both of Corinth; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Steverson, Rayburn Jennings, Bobby Shands Medlin, Gerald Brown, Ray Henderson, Butch Tapp, Jim Jackson, Bonnie Reaves, Chris Reaves and Gerald Crawford. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Ripley Funeral Home.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1958, to William R. and Ora Mae Young Cox in New Albany. She was a former employee of Sunbeam and Woodcraft, and a member of First Baptist Church of Potts Camp.

SHANNON – Mary Ann “Sutter” Baker Shumpert, 63, died Monday, May 7, 2012, at her home. She was born April 29, 1949, to Nathaniel Baker and Daisey Hodges Baker. She was a member of Poplar Springs CME Church. She received her education from Fannie Carter School. She was a former employee of Reed Manufacturing, Lee’s Sports and Quality Foods. She was loved by all. Her personality was exceptional.

YOUNGS LANDING – Bud Dempsey McGee, 76, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. He was born April 19, 1936, in Chickasaw County. He was a retired construction carpenter and a member of Carpenters Union Local 345 in Memphis for over 40 years. He was a volunteer firefighter for Clear Springs Fire Department. He was a resident of Youngs Landing in Grenada County.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church at Big Creek with the Rev. John Hearn officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery at Big Creek. Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City is in charge of the arrangements.
