Rev. William E. Harrison

TUPELO – The Rev. William Eugene “Bill” Harrison, 81, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Corinth. He was the son of Thomas Solin Harrison and Edna Delaney Harrison. On Nov. 24, 1955, he married Emily June Wells of Jackson. They were married for 56 years.

He is survived by two children, Emily Harrison Hill (John Samuel) of Tupelo and Kathryn Harrison Coleman (Kenneth David) of Pebble Beach, Calif. He is also survived by his sister, Bernice H. Parvin of Starkville and brothers, Gerald M. Harrison (Linda) of Deland, Fla., and Dr. Danny E. Harrison (Judy) of Montgomery, Ala. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Anna Kathryn Sloan (Shipman) of Tupelo, Marilyn Wells Hill of Nashville, Tenn., John Samuel Hill Jr. of Tupelo and Harrison Sidney Coleman of Pebble Beach, Calif., as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gratia H. Underwood of Corinth.

Born the middle child of five children in Corinth, he attended public schools, graduating with honors from Corinth High School in 1949. He played left field on the State Championship team in 1949. He attended Wood Junior College, Millsaps College and graduated from Mississippi State University in 1955, and then worked as a research assistant at Mississippi State in the Department of Sociology. He received his Masters in Divinity from Emory University Candler School of Theology in 1958. He served as a minister in the North Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1951 until his death, preaching his last sermon the Sunday prior to his passing. He served pastorates in Shannon, Itta Bena, Indianola, New Albany and Tupelo, and then beginning in 1983 served as preaching associate on the Okolona Parish until his death, as well as being an agent for the Equitable Financial Company in Tupelo. During the civil rights era of the 1960’s, he served churches in the Delta region of the state. He was one of the founding members of the Ministerial Association in the Greenwood and Indianola areas. He was also a member of the first bi-racial committee in the city of Tupelo and delivered the sermon of the first community Thanksgiving service. He was also a former board member of United Methodist Senior Services of Mississippi and a member of the Mississippi Conference Board of Evangelism. He was also a member of The Lions Club, serving as president in Indianola.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Steven Parvin, Bob Fuller, Jack Hill, Shipman Sloan, Tom Underwood and John Underwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be fellow United Methodist Ministers and Hardee’s Coffee Bunch.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012, at First United Methodist Church in Tupelo with the Rev. Jim Curtis, the Rev. Reagan Miskelly, the Rev. Jimmy Criddle and the Rev. Stacey Parvin Fuller officiating. Burial will follow immediately at Lee Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 26, 2012, at The Gathering Room of the First United Methodist Church in Tupelo from 9 a.m. until service time.

Paige Underwood

SHADY POINT, Okla. – Paige Breanne Underwood, 16, died Thursday, May 17, 2012, in Calhoun, Okla., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born Oct. 3, 1995, in Tupelo to Jerry Underwood Jr., and Melissa K. Bradley Underwood.

A sophomore at Poteau High School, Paige was a member of the National Honor Society and a former member of the Junior National Honor Society, was secretary of the FFA, had been a starter on the varsity soccer team since her freshman year, and was an eight-year member of 4-H, where she had served as the president, vice-president and secretary. She was a member of Calhoun Baptist Church. Having a smile that lit up the world, Paige was a kind-hearted, devoted, loving, supportive and generous young lady. Never meeting a stranger and living life to the fullest, Paige was an avid runner, loved to play soccer with her dog, Dixie, loved her car, Daisy, enjoyed spending time with her friends, and scrapbooking. An aspiring veterinarian, she loved animals, enjoyed showing them in FFA competitions and was instrumental in creating a fundraising campaign for her local humane society. Competing at the age of 9 in a state-wide competition that included adults, her invention of an “easy-load leaf bag” was selected as the Best Overall. By winning this competition, Paige got to meet the Oklahoma governor as well as her local state senator and representative. There were few things Paige loved more than food, yet her family always came first.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at Smithville Baptist Church with Bro. Wes White officiating. Private burial will be in the family cemetery in Smithville. Pallbearers will be Bret Newman, Chance and Blaine Underwood, Rick Adams, Corey Farrar, Wyatt Adams and Lane Watson, Jordan Rose, Tyler Smith and Fisher Young.

She is survived by her parents, Melissa and Kevin Holcomb, Shady Point, Okla., and Jerry Underwood Jr., Mantachie; sisters, Ashley Guin and fiancé, Bret Newman, Spiro, Okla., Harlee Underwood and Tori Horton, Mantachie; maternal grandparents, David and Dianne Reese, Fulton, and H.C. and Betty Bradley, Marietta; paternal grandfather, Jerry Underwood Sr., Mantachie, and Cecil and Vera Holcomb, Talihina, Okla.; paternal great-grandmother, Flora King of Talihina, Okla.; niece, Emma Kathryn Newman, Spiro, Okla.; and numerous aunts, uncles, other relatives and loved ones.

Paige was preceded in death by her paternal grandmothers, Brenda Underwood and Harriett June Holcomb.

HOUSTON - Annie Jewel Reed Tabb, 95, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012. She was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Oktibbeha County to Jessie Laffette Reed and Martha Ann Kimbol Reed. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very talented at crocheting and had a green thumb. She was Primitive Baptist.

Trice Taylor

CABOT, Ark. - Jimmy Trice Taylor, 75, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012. He was born March 15, 1937, in Jericho to Sam and Pauline Taylor. He graduated from Jericho High School. He was a businessman working many years in the sewing machine industry and owning several related businesses. He later operated Beebe Raceway and most recently owned and operated Sylvania Corner Market. He was a tremendous man with great integrity and dignity.

Eloise McAnally

BOONEVILLE - Virginia Eloise McAnally, 65, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at her home in the Thrasher community. She was born Aug. 3, 1946, in Cairo to Rev. James Sidney and Ocene Lambert Whitehead. She started her nursing career at Northeast Mississippi Hospital as a nursing aide in 1966. She graduated the LPN program at Northeast Community College in 1968. Ten years later she graduated the RN program at Northeast Mississippi Community College. Later she became Director of Nursing at Oakview Nursing Home in Baldwyn and then later became Director of Nursing at Aletha Lodge Nursing Home in Booneville. Geriatric nursing was always her favorite field of nursing. She enjoyed spending time with family, playing the piano, knitting, crocheting,and camping with her family. She was a member of Thrasher Baptist Church and Eastern Star.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday today at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Doug Rakestraw officiating. Burial will be in New Lebanon Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Jim McAnally; her children, Debbie (Chris) Burns, Mark (Charlotte) McAnally and David McAnally; her mother, Ocene Whitehead; a sister, Betty (Ken) Sims; two brothers, Jimmy Dean (Lanna) Whitehead and Ronnie Whitehead; seven grandchildren, JoAnna Ericksen, Amy (Brandon) Baldwyn, Josh McAnally, Tessa Starnes, Brandon McAnally, Seth Burns and Adam McAnally; and nine great-grandchildren, Braidon Ericksen, Keegan Hamm, Jaleea Gates, Elijah Baldwyn, Isaiah Baldwyn, JennaBeth Starnes, Adyson Starnes, Paisely Edge and Lauren Elise Edge.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. James Sidney Whitehead; and one sister, Lynn Whitehead Stephens.

Benjamin Hallmark

BALDWYN - Benjamin Franklin Hallmark, 91, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at his residence. A lifelong resident of Lee County, he was born Nov. 1, 1920, to Wiley Elick and Mary Parker Hallmark. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he used his talents as an accomplished fiddle player to entertain the troops in Cohns, France. For a number of years, he played in a number of local country music bands. He was the owner of Hallmark's Jewelry in Nettleton for 15 years and later worked in the jewelry repair with Gibson's in Tupelo.

Services with military honors will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Jerry Hallmark officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Eddie Wayne Hallmark of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Sam Hallmark of West Memphis, Ark.; two brothers-in-law, Robert Parker of Tupelo and Robert Holcomb of Plantersville; seven nephews and their families; six nieces and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, David, Vess and Ruel Hallmark; two sisters, Elsie Parker and Mona Holcomb.

Martha Warren

PONTOTOC - Martha Dale Harville Warren, 69, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born Nov. 29, 1942, to Edd Harville and Ovie wigington Harville. She was a member of Furrs Baptist Church in Pontotoc. She worked more than 20 years at BellSouth and at National Car Rental, Jamp&F Manufacturing and most recently at Jamp&R Machine Shop. She also helped organize the gospel group Witness Quartet, which is now known as Stronghold.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at White Zion Presbyterian Church in the Furrs community. Bro. Scott Witcher and Bro. Calvin Warren will officiate. Burial will be in the White Zion Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Ross E. Hargett

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Ross Edward Hargett, 81, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at W Drive North Assisted Living. He was born Nov. 17, 1930, to Von and Thelma Stone Hargett in Vina, Ala. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War from Oct,19, 1951m through Oct, 7, 1953. He worked in billboard advertising in Adrian and Kalamazoo (Michigan) before becoming the owner of Hargett Advertising, a local billboard and sign company, in Battle Creek in 1983. He married Mary Ellen Davis on Oct. 2, 1950, in Fulton.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, of Battle Creek, Mich.; his son, Doug Hargett of Battle Creek; his daughter, Susan (David) Horner of Ridgefield, Conn.; three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Sarah and Katherine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Olan Hargett; and a sister, Jewel Thorn.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Shaw Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the funeral home with Pastor G. PONTOTOC - Clyde Stribling 73, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born Sept. 8, 1938, to Leroy Stribling and Odell Smith Stribling. He was a member of Big Hill United Methodist Church in Pontotoc. He attended school at College Hiil. He retired from Tupelo City Public Work after many years.

OXFORD - Coria Lee Polk, 68, died Saturday, May 19, 2012, at her daughter's home in Oxford. A native of Tate County, she was the daughter of the late John Bethel Polk and Bessie Carter Polk. She was a member of Askew Grove M.B. Church in Longtown.She was a member of the Eastern Star and a retired employee of Thermos in Batesville. She loved to read, cook and take care of her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Gwendolyn Smith of Oxford and Sophia Stewart of Horn Lake; two sons, Anthony Todd Polk of Longtown and Darryl Polk of Oxford; four sisters, Georgia Crowder of Memphis, Mary Polk and Dorothy Polk, both of Longtown, and Edna Polk of Clarksdale; two brothers, George Polk and Bethel Polk Jr., both of Memphis; a goddaughter, Bessie Malone of Oxford; and 11 grandchildren.

Robert Clark

OXFORD - Robert James Clark, 82, died Thursday, May 17, 2012, at the Bpatist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. A native of Lafayette County, he was the son of the late Robert and Lucy Clark. He was a member of Harrisonville M.B. Church where he served as a deacon and superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a member of Taylor Masonic Lodge PHA. He was a retired security guard for Emerson Electric, a farmer and a foster grandparent for North Mississippi Regional Center. He was the husband of the late Edna Price Clark.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clear Creek M.B. Church. Dr. Robert Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Harrisonville Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by three daughters, LaQuita Clark and Gwendolyn Covington, both of Oxfrod, and Pamela Clark of Ridgeland; three sons, Dr. Robert (Kay) Fox and Robert Earl Clark, both of Oxford, and Jimi (Dorothy) Clark of Memphis; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ray D. Shack

NETTLETON - Ray D. Shack, 57, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Sept. 21, 1954, to Odell and Marie Brackett Shacks Seals. He was a member of Jerusalem M.B. Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

TUPELO - Gerald Wayne Little, 72, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born in Itawamba County on Aug. 21, 1939, to Theron E. and Annie Norene Francis Little. He served in the National Guard. He retired from the Tupelo Police Department after 20 years of service as a police officer. He was a Presbyterian. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and all sports.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Bobby Holland officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include five children, Susan Little May of the Jug Fork community, Sandy Broschinsky (Rob) of Irvine, Calif., Marty W. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ New Beginning Church at Holly Springs. Burial will be in Cottrell Memorial Garden in Holly Springs. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family receiving visitors from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The body will lie in repose at the church from 9 to 9:55 a.m. Saturday.
