St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Amory will host their first madrigal dinner Dec. 8 and 9. A madrigal dinner is a dinner in a medieval style. There will be a short play and a capella singing performances. The entertainment will draw heavily from audience interaction and will feature elaborate costumes and stage props.
Master’s Quartet 23rd annual Homecoming
The Master’s Quartet, a Southern Gospel singing group, will be in concert tonight at the Prentiss County Agri-Center in Boonville. Gospel singing groups The Inspirations and the McKameys will also take the stage. General admission will be $12 in advance and $15 at the door. First Presbyterian Church dedicates piano
At 3 p.m. this Sunday in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo, a ceremony will take place to honor the church’s new grand piano. The instrument was purchased with donations from congregation members.
Dr. Ray Harris, organist at First Presbyterian, and Ben Tomlinson of Corinth will perform pieces of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Debussy and Copeland. In addition a small choral ensemble will sing several selections accompanied by the piano.
Bishop Welby named archbishop of Canterbury
Bishop Justin Welby, a former oil executive who’s emerged as a critic of corporate excess, was named Friday as the 105th archbishop of Canterbury, primate of the Church of England and leader of the worldwide 77 million-member Anglican Communion.
A statement from British Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed the appointment after two days of speculation. Welby, 56, succeeds Archbishop Rowan Williams.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Welby said he is “utterly optimistic” about the future of the Church of England.
Buddhist makes history in Congress
Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat from Hawaii, will become the first Hindu- American congresswoman, after defeating her Republican rival on Tuesday.
Born in American Samoa to a Catholic father and a Hindu mother, the Iraq War veteran said she follows the Vaishnava branch of Hinduism, which venerates the deity Lord Vishnu and his incarnations.
Gabbard will take the congressional seat of another Democrat, Mazie Hirono, who will be the nation’s first Buddhist senator when the new Congress convenes in January.
