Happy Monday.
It's been a little quiet here on the blog lately, b/c I took a few days off late last week.
Everytime I take a little time off, I always say I'm going to do something cool or important, like seriously spring clean or have a Bette Davis movie marathon or something.
I'll get around to that, one day. Really.
Instead, I was pretty lazy, and I watched about a movie or two a day. That's super-duper out of the norm for me.
Anyway, everything I watched was great, so I thought I'd share...
The first was the documentary, "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work."
The doc follows her around for a year, and also tells the story of her rise to fame. It shows a little bit of everything, from her Thanksgiving celebration to begging for work to playing in small clubs in nowheresville.
It was funny, touching, frustrating, uplifting. Trust me when I say you don't know the real Joan Rivers – and can't really judge her – until you see this movie.
The second was a Bette Davis movie I'd never seen before: "Deception."
Delicious title, no?
It stars three of my favorites, Davis, Claude Rains and Paul Henreid. I mean, really, can you get a better cast? (the trio also appeared in one of my very favorite movies, "Now, Voyager.")
In "Deception," they're all musicians caught in a triangle. Christine (Davis) and Karel (Henreid) were lovers separated by WWII, but once they are reunited, Karel notices Christine is living a pretty lavish lifestyle for a musician. He doesn't know her life is paid for by her lover, genius composer Hollenius (Rains), who she has been seeing since Karel went missing.
The triangle is a messy one, to say the least, and it ends in murder.
If you're a fan of melodrama, you'll dig "Deception."
The third was a blast from the past for me: the 1956 thriller "The Bad Seed."
I can't remember how I happened to see this movie as a kid, but I did, and I watched it endlessly.
I happened across it the other day on TCM and DVR'd it, and I've watched it several times since then. It's probably been 10 years since I last saw it, but it holds up well.
All you need to know: Rhoda is an adorable little girl...with a dark side.
I love, love, love this movie.
