OXFORD — The Oxford Endowment for Public Education has given Oxford School District teachers grants totaling $11,000.

The Oxford Eagle reports that one went to Julie Cantrell, who wants two iPads for students learning English as a second language at Bramlett Elementary School. She says they'll help students check their English pronunciation, help translate during parent-teacher conferences, and track vocabulary and reading comprehension.

President Meridith Wulff says the foundation gives money for student-oriented, non-routine projects that cannot get money from other sources.

Oxford middle School math teacher Andrew Field says he got calculators with screens that can be read easily by students with visual disabilities, and a specialized calculator that requires a student to enter a reasonable estimate before it gives a precise answer.
