Oxford's Young Buffalo is about to go on tour with bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Tennis and The Vaccines.
That's a pretty big deal, which is fitting, because Young Buffalo is becoming a Big Deal.
All this buzz is because of the adventurous sounds that band members Jim Barrett, Ben Yarbrough and Alex von Hardberger make. The group showcases its sound on its debut EP, "Young Von Prettylips."
Young Buffalo's sound is marked by tribal-like percussion and soaring harmonies, making for an intense sound. "Only We Can Keep You From Harm," the EP's first cut, is a prime example of this. It's a swirling song with such movement, that it's hard not to feel a little swimmy after hearing it.
"Full Metal Whacket" is like a carnival ride in a song, with ups and downs. Starry pop cozies up to gutsy indie rock on the track.
The adventurous "Catapilah," which helped generate a lot of buzz for the band, anchors the EP.
"Young Von Prettylips" is an excellent introduction to Young Buffalo. We in North Mississipi already know this band a Big Deal, but thanks to this EP, now the world will know it, too.
Young Buffalo's "Young Von Prettylips" releases next Tuesday, or you can pick up a copy at this Saturday's EP release show at Proud Larry's.
